Amazon Web Services Expands Reach with New Mexico Infrastructure Region

On January 14, 2025, Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced the launch of its new AWS Mexico (Central) Region. This strategic move marks a landmark investment of over $5 billion over the next 15 years, aimed at enhancing Mexico's digital infrastructure and driving economic growth. With this new region, AWS aims to provide local developers, startups, enterprises, and government entities with greater flexibility and options for running their applications from state-of-the-art data centers situated within Mexico.

The establishment of the AWS Mexico (Central) Region is expected to have a substantial impact on the Mexican economy, contributing approximately $10 billion to the country's gross domestic product (GDP). AWS anticipates that the new region will create over 7,000 full-time equivalent jobs annually across various sectors, including construction, engineering, telecommunications, and facility maintenance. This initiative is poised to strengthen the AWS supply chain within Mexico, further supporting local businesses and the economy.

Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, highlighted the significance of this launch. “This launch marks a significant step as we continue to expand our infrastructure and deliver global innovation in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and other advanced technologies for our customers,” he stated. The new AWS Mexico Region will enable businesses to leverage secure, reliable infrastructure and a comprehensive suite of AWS technologies, positioning them at the forefront of innovation in AI and ML.

Marcelo Ebrard, the Mexican Secretary of Economy, emphasized the potential of this investment to catalyze economic growth and digital inclusion in Mexico. “Today’s launch represents a significant milestone in Mexico’s digital transformation journey. The AWS investment will strengthen Mexico's technology infrastructure and unlock new opportunities for innovation,” he remarked. Ebrard's sentiments were echoed by other local officials, including Altagracia Gomez Sierra, Coordinator of the President’s Business Council, who noted the long-term benefits for job creation and workforce development stemming from AWS’s commitment to sustainable socioeconomic growth.

The AWS Mexico (Central) Region consists of three Availability Zones, strategically located to ensure business continuity while providing low latency for high-availability applications. This architectural design allows customers to run applications across multiple Availability Zones, enhancing fault tolerance and ensuring robust operational capabilities. With the launch of this region, AWS now boasts 114 Availability Zones across 36 geographic regions, with ongoing plans for expansion.

The AWS Mexico Region is set to benefit a wide array of customers, from startups to large enterprises, and public sector organizations. Major clients such as BBVA, Grupo Lala, and Digital@FEMSA are poised to leverage the new local infrastructure to enhance their operations. Rafael Rosales Gomez, head of Engineering at BBVA Mexico, expressed excitement about the new opportunities for innovation and digital transformation it presents for the financial sector.

Local startups like Jüsto and Konfio also stand to gain from AWS's offerings, with Jüsto's CTO Oleksandr Shcherbina noting that the new region will facilitate compliance with data residency laws while enhancing operational efficiencies.

In conjunction with its infrastructure development, AWS has committed to ongoing training initiatives aimed at upskilling the local workforce. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 500,000 individuals in Mexico in cloud skills and aims to train an additional 200,000 by the end of 2026. With programs like AWS re/Start and partnerships with universities, AWS is making strides to democratize access to technical knowledge and empower the next generation of tech leaders.

AWS’s focus on sustainability is evident in the design and operation of the new Mexico Region. The facilities will adhere to the highest energy efficiency standards, playing a crucial role in AWS's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The new data center will utilize air-cooling systems, minimizing reliance on water and optimizing energy usage.
