In a bold move to enhance passenger experience, United Airlines Holdings Inc. has announced the introduction of a new Economy Plus seating option that promises extra elbow room on its upcoming Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This latest innovation, revealed on July 14, 2026, reflects the airline's commitment to customer comfort and its ongoing investment in fleet modernization.

1. A New Level of Comfort in Economy Class

The newly designed Economy Plus seats will feature a row of seating equipped with additional elbow room and access to a shared table across an open middle seat. This innovative design aims to provide travelers with more space to relax, especially on longer international flights. The new offering is set to go on sale later this year and will be included in the entire order of 50 A321XLR aircraft.

Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the airline's commitment to enhancing customer choice and value across all cabin classes. "We're investing nose-to-tail across our fleet and giving customers choice and value in every cabin," Nocella stated. He further noted that the A321XLR will feature not only all-aisle access lie-flat seats in United Polaris® but also these newly designed Economy Plus seats.

2. Features of the New Economy Plus Seats

The standout feature of the Economy Plus seats on the A321XLR is a large, custom-designed table that stretches from armrest to armrest across the open middle seats. This table, which is permanently fixed and covered in a soft leather-like material, includes two indentations for cups, providing practical utility for passengers. In addition to the extra elbow room, travelers will also benefit from three inches of additional legroom already offered in the Economy Plus section.

Future Plans for the A321XLR

United Airlines is not stopping with the Economy Plus innovation. The airline is also exploring the possibility of introducing similar seating options on other aircraft types in the future. The A321XLR, designed from the ground up to be the airline's most premium narrowbody airplane, features a total of 32 premium seats—16 more than the Boeing 757s it will replace. This aircraft is set to operate with five flight attendants on most transatlantic flights, aligning with United's established service standards.

The A321XLR is expected to elevate the travel experience with its comprehensive features, including large 4K OLED screens and Bluetooth connectivity for every seat. The airline plans to roll out its first domestic flights on the A321XLR later this fall, with international services anticipated to begin by early 2027.

3. Commitment to Customer Experience

United Airlines aims to set itself apart as the only U.S. airline offering this unique Economy Plus seating option. This announcement follows the recent introduction of the United Relax Row, which features multiple rows of seats on Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft that can transform into a couch, expected to be available in early 2027.

As United Airlines continues to innovate and enhance its offerings, passengers can look forward to more comfortable and enjoyable travel experiences in the future. The airline plans to share additional details about the new Economy Plus product, including pricing, before it becomes available for sale later this year.
