Trimble Integrates AI with SketchUp: A New Era for 3D Modeling

The newly launched SketchUp Connector, which utilizes a model context protocol (MCP) service, allows Claude to interact directly with SketchUp files (.skp). This integration not only enhances existing design workflows but also opens the door for those who may have previously found 3D modeling to be daunting. By simply describing their vision—whether it be a building, landscape, or piece of furniture—users can generate complex 3D geometries without needing extensive technical knowledge.

Chris Cronin, Vice President and General Manager of Architecture and Design Solutions at Trimble, highlighted the transformative potential of this integration. "The learning curve and time it takes for professionals to transfer a vision to a digital model has traditionally been the biggest barrier to 3D modeling," he stated. With Claude's capabilities, the goal of making 3D design accessible to everyone is a step closer to reality.

One of the standout features of the SketchUp Connector is its ability to process plain-language commands. Users can provide text descriptions alongside reference images, sketches, and floor plans, which Claude uses to comprehend the design intentions. As the user iterates on their design, Claude builds the 3D model in a cloud-based SketchUp session, verifying dimensions and ensuring accuracy in real-time.

The integration also allows users to track version history within a single chat, facilitating easier navigation and troubleshooting. If adjustments are needed, users can simply describe the changes or upload screenshots, making the editing process more intuitive.

Upon completion of a model, the SketchUp Connector generates a 2D preview thumbnail along with a direct download link for the .skp file. This feature enables users to instantly download, open, and edit their models across various platforms, including SketchUp for Web, Desktop, iPad, or iPhone.

Moreover, users have the option to train Claude on specific skills and workflows, enabling the AI to handle repetitive tasks, thereby increasing overall efficiency in the design process.

Trimble's integration with Claude is part of a broader initiative to democratize advanced technology. The SketchUp Connector is available for users today through Claude's MCP directory connector settings. To access this feature, users must have a Claude account and a Trimble ID for authentication. Trimble is offering a free entitlement that allows users to save up to 30 SketchUp models; thereafter, a paid entitlement will be required for additional storage.
