1. Introduction

On February 16, 2026, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (HPE) announced a transformative partnership with Atlético de Madrid to modernize the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium's infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance the fan experience through the implementation of a cutting-edge, self-driving network based on HPE's advanced networking solutions. The comprehensive project, set to unfold over the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons, marks a significant advancement in the digitalization of sports venues in Europe.

2. Modernizing the Stadium's Communications System

The Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, which has hosted Atlético de Madrid since its inauguration in 2017, will see its existing communications system—operational for eight seasons—completely overhauled. The new network will feature more than 1,500 next-generation Wi-Fi 7 wireless access points, all managed through HPE Aruba Central. This platform employs artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to monitor network performance, dynamically adjusting radio frequency parameters to optimize service during high-traffic events.

Enhancing Fan Experience with AI

The integration of AI into the stadium's network infrastructure is designed to significantly elevate the fan experience. HPE’s Aruba Networking AirMatch technology will enable real-time adjustments to channel and power settings, ensuring optimal connectivity even during peak attendance. This capability is particularly crucial during major events, where tens of thousands of fans gather and network congestion can be a challenge.

3. Smart Analytics and Energy Efficiency

In addition to improved connectivity, the new infrastructure will incorporate location services and presence analytics powered by AI. This feature will visualize heatmaps and mobility flows within the stadium, providing insights that enhance security measures and optimize access management. The data-driven approach allows for better staffing and logistical planning based on actual fan behavior.

Moreover, HPE is committed to energy efficiency; the new system will feature an AI-powered dynamic power save mode. This technology allows access points to enter low-power states when not in active use, significantly reducing electricity consumption in a venue that operates at full capacity only during events.

4. Dedicated Network for Audiovisual Production

As part of the technological upgrade, a dedicated network for audiovisual production will be established, entirely separate from the general IT network. This infrastructure will be designed with stringent segmentation and Quality of Service (QoS) policies to ensure the integrity of high-bitrate video broadcasts while minimizing latency. Currently, switching tests and traffic validation are being conducted in collaboration with Telefónica Services Audiovisuals.

5. Future Expansion Plans

The revitalization of the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium is just the beginning. Plans are also in place to deploy HPE networking solutions to other facilities within the Sport City complex. Construction is set to commence in the first half of 2026, with the High-Performance Center also slated to feature a robust HPE network, covering training fields, medical areas, press zones, and audiovisual production spaces between 2025 and 2027.

6. Insights from HPE Leadership

Alfredo Yepez, Senior Vice President & Managing Director for Latin America and Southern Europe at HPE, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in network management: “Artificial Intelligence applied to networks is no longer a promise; it is a reality that transforms the way complex infrastructures like a stadium are managed.” Yepez highlighted that AI not only enhances the fan experience but also contributes to reduced energy consumption and proactive issue resolution.

7. Atlético de Madrid's Vision

Óscar Mayo, Chief Revenue and Operating Officer of Atlético de Madrid, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with HPE, stating, “Our agreement with HPE will allow us to elevate the quality of connectivity in our stadium.” The club aims to provide enhanced bandwidth and innovative services associated with the new infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to delivering a connected experience for fans and visitors alike.

8. Conclusion

The collaboration between HPE and Atlético de Madrid represents a significant leap toward creating a safer, more efficient, and sustainable digital ecosystem within the sports domain. The Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium is poised to become a benchmark for technological innovation in sports, setting the stage for future advancements in connectivity and user experience that will redefine the landscape of major sports venues.
