1. Consolidated Financial Performance

United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) released its earnings report for the first quarter of 2025 today, revealing consolidated revenues of $21.5 billion. This marks a slight decrease of 0.7% from the same period in 2024. Despite the drop in revenue, the company reported a consolidated operating profit of $1.7 billion, which reflects a 3.3% increase year-over-year, and a non-GAAP adjusted operating profit growth of 0.9%. The diluted earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter were reported at $1.40, while the non-GAAP adjusted diluted EPS was $1.49, representing a 4.2% increase compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Notable Charges Impacting Earnings

The GAAP results for the quarter included a net charge of $83 million, or $0.09 per diluted share. This charge consisted of $44 million associated with transformation strategy costs and a non-cash impairment charge of $49 million, largely related to asset and investment impairments. However, the company experienced a $10 million benefit from a partial reversal of an income tax valuation allowance, which somewhat mitigated the overall impact of these charges.

2. Segment Performance Insights

U.S. Domestic Segment

The U.S. Domestic segment generated revenues of $14.46 billion in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting a 1.4% growth year-over-year. This increase was primarily driven by heightened air cargo demand and a notable 4.5% rise in revenue per piece, despite a decline in total volume. The operating profit for this segment reached $979 million, with an operating margin of 6.8%, while the non-GAAP adjusted operating margin was slightly higher at 7.0%.

International Segment

UPS's International segment saw revenue growth of 2.7%, totaling $4.373 billion. This growth was supported by a 7.1% increase in average daily volume. The operating profit for this segment was $641 million, with an operating margin of 14.7% and a non-GAAP adjusted operating margin of 15.0%.

Supply Chain Solutions Segment

In contrast, the Supply Chain Solutions segment reported a significant decline, with revenues falling 14.8% to $2.713 billion, primarily due to the divestiture of Coyote. The operating profit plummeted to $46 million, resulting in an operating margin of only 1.7%, while the non-GAAP adjusted operating margin was 3.6%.

3. Strategic Outlook and CEO Remarks

Carol Tomé, UPS's CEO, expressed gratitude for the dedication of the company's workforce during these challenging times. She highlighted the importance of leveraging UPS's integrated network and trade expertise to navigate the evolving trade landscape. “The macro environment may be uncertain, but with our actions, we will emerge as an even stronger, more nimble UPS,” Tomé stated, underscoring the company's commitment to reducing costs and reconfiguring its network.

4. 2025 Outlook

Looking ahead, UPS has refrained from updating its previously issued consolidated full-year outlook due to ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties. The company plans to provide insights into its second-quarter financial performance during its earnings conference call.

5. Conference Call Information

Investors and analysts can tune in to the earnings conference call hosted by CEO Carol Tomé and CFO Brian Dykes at 8:30 a.m. ET on April 29, 2025. The call will be accessible through a live webcast, where additional financial details will also be available.
