Southwest Airlines Announces New Crew Base in Austin: A Strategic Move for Growth

In a significant development for both the airline and the Central Texas region, Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) has announced the opening of a new Crew Base for Pilots and Flight Attendants at Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), set to commence operations in March 2026. This strategic move is expected to create over 2,000 new jobs and reinforces the airline's commitment to expanding its footprint in the dynamic Austin market.

The new Crew Base will primarily employ Captains, First Officers, and Flight Attendants, along with a dedicated base leadership and support staff. Southwest Airlines plans to enhance its workforce training capabilities by establishing a recurring training facility for Flight Attendants, which is part of the airline’s broader business transformation efforts.

Bob Jordan, President, CEO, and Vice Chairman of the Board, expressed the company's enthusiasm about this investment, stating, "This investment demonstrates our commitment to Austin and to our Customers." He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of local leaders, including Governor Abbott and Mayor Watson, in facilitating Southwest's ongoing growth in the region.

Southwest Airlines has solidified its position as Austin's largest air carrier, boasting more than 130 peak-day departures that served approximately 6.7 million customers in 2024. The airline is set to enhance its service offerings next March with new routes to popular leisure destinations such as Fort Myers, Florida, Palm Springs, California, and Steamboat Springs (Hayden), Colorado, bringing the total number of nonstop destinations from Austin to an impressive 53.

Additionally, the airline will introduce daily service between Austin and Cincinnati, Ohio, starting in June, alongside increased seasonal service in markets such as Pensacola, Florida.

The new Crew Base will initially open with around 335 Pilots and 650 Flight Attendants, with projections to grow to a total workforce of 2,000 employees by mid-2027. This expansion is the result of meticulous planning and analysis by Southwest's operational planners, who have closely engaged with Austin city leaders and the Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office under Governor Abbott.

As part of its agreement with the City of Austin, Southwest Airlines is committed to fostering community engagement and workforce development. The airline plans to continue its partnership with Austin Workforce Solutions by collaborating with the Austin Infrastructure Academy and expanding its existing youth internship program at AUS. Additionally, the AUS Career Center will serve as a vital resource for all open positions at Southwest Airlines in the Austin area.
