In a groundbreaking move for its customer experience, Southwest Airlines Co. has announced the introduction of assigned seating, a feature set to launch on January 27, 2026. This new option aims to provide customers with greater control and choice over their travel experience. Beginning July 29, 2025, customers will be able to select their seats at the time of booking, a significant evolution for the airline known for its open seating policy.

1. Enhancing Customer Experience

Tony Roach, Executive Vice President of Customer & Brand at Southwest Airlines, highlighted the importance of this shift, stating, "Our Customers want more choice and greater control over their travel experience." The introduction of assigned seating is not only about comfort but also about offering customers the freedom to choose from various fare bundles that include options for Extra Legroom, Preferred, and Standard seats.

Fare Bundles and Seat Selection

With the new fare bundles, customers can now select their seats during the booking process. For those who hold Rapid Rewards® Credit Cards, depending on the type of card, seat selection can occur either at booking or within 48 hours of departure, including for Basic fares. Additionally, A-List and A-List Preferred Customers will also enjoy the privilege of selecting their seats at booking, enhancing their travel experience regardless of fare type.

2. A Streamlined Boarding Process

The transition to assigned seating will coincide with a reimagined boarding process designed to ensure a smooth and efficient experience. Under the new system, boarding will be organized into groups based on seat location, with priority given to Extra Legroom seats and premium fare customers. This refined approach aims to minimize confusion and enhance the overall boarding experience.

Customers will also have the option to purchase Priority Boarding starting 24 hours before departure, allowing them to board among the first—a feature likely to be popular among frequent travelers.

3. Marketing Campaign to Build Excitement

Accompanying this major announcement is the launch of a new advertising campaign titled "Are You Sitting Down?" This campaign leverages Southwest's signature humor to create excitement around the assigned seating feature, aiming to engage customers and generate buzz as the launch date approaches.

4. A Legacy of Hospitality

Southwest Airlines, a company that has operated since 1971, is renowned for its commitment to low-cost, friendly air travel. The introduction of assigned seating marks a significant milestone in the airline's evolution, as it continues to prioritize customer satisfaction while maintaining its core values of hospitality and reliability.

As the airline prepares for this major transition, it remains focused on its mission to democratize air travel, ensuring that the needs and preferences of its customers remain at the forefront of its operations.

With over 71,000 employees and a loyal customer base of over 140 million travelers carried in 2024, Southwest Airlines is poised to take this next step forward, promising a new level of comfort and convenience for its passengers.
