In a significant move aimed at expanding its global reach, Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) has announced the initiation of discussions with China Airlines Group, a prominent Taiwan-based carrier, to establish an interline partnership set to launch in early 2026. The partnership, which marks Southwest's first trans-Pacific alliance, was unveiled during a joint press conference at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in New Delhi, India.

1. Expanding Connectivity

Southwest Airlines' Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Watterson, emphasized the importance of this partnership in enhancing customer experience and connectivity. "We're on a journey to bring more choices to our Customers," Watterson stated. He described the collaboration with China Airlines as a pivotal step in creating seamless trans-Pacific journeys. This partnership aims to extend Southwest's network and offer customers access to international connections, particularly benefitting travelers in the U.S. who seek routes to Asia.

Furthermore, Watterson highlighted that Southwest is currently the largest carrier of domestic passengers in the United States and has a strong presence in California, suggesting that the partnership would provide immediate benefits to Southwest customers looking to travel overseas.

2. A Vision for Long-haul Travel

Kevin Chen, President of China Airlines, underscored the strategic importance of the partnership in China Airlines' long-term goals. He stated, "Growing our long-haul network has always been China Airlines' long-term plan." The partnership will coincide with China Airlines' expansion of gateway operations in key U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Ontario, California. This will allow for an integrated travel experience, where customers can book itineraries with both airlines under a single ticket, thereby enhancing convenience and connectivity for U.S. travelers heading to Asia.

3. A Growing Network of Partnerships

This announcement comes on the heels of Southwest's recent partnership with Icelandair, which has facilitated connections between the U.S. and Europe. Starting July 14, 2025, the two airlines will introduce connecting services through additional cities, including Orlando, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh-Durham. Watterson noted that there has been considerable global interest in potential partnerships with Southwest, reflecting the airline's reputation for reliability and a customer-friendly brand.

4. About the Airlines

Southwest Airlines, established in 1971, is celebrated for its commitment to democratizing air travel by offering friendly, reliable, and low-cost services. With operations at 117 airports across 11 countries, Southwest has become the leading airline for domestic travel in the United States, serving over 140 million customers in 2024.

On the other hand, China Airlines, founded in 1959, operates a fleet of 111 aircraft and employs over 10,000 people worldwide. The airline aims to provide a superior flying experience and is recognized as the leading air cargo carrier in Taiwan.

As both airlines forge ahead with this partnership, travelers can look forward to an enhanced travel experience that bridges the Pacific, making international connectivity more accessible than ever before.
