On January 14, 2026, Comcast Corporation, in collaboration with the Healey-Driscoll administration and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s Massachusetts Broadband Institute (MBI), announced substantial advancements in broadband infrastructure aimed at public and affordable housing units across Massachusetts. This initiative marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide in the Commonwealth.

1. Significant Upgrades in Connectivity

The broadband upgrades are part of the first round of funding from the Residential Retrofit Program, designed to provide residents of public and affordable housing with access to high-speed, symmetrical Internet. The upgrades are expected to offer enhanced connectivity, enabling residents to engage in streaming, remote work, telehealth services, and smart home technology—all essential components of modern living.

The announcement was made at Just A Start, a nonprofit housing development in Cambridge, which has become one of the first properties to receive these crucial infrastructure improvements. Comcast’s installation of state-of-the-art wiring aims to ensure residents benefit from fast and reliable broadband and robust WiFi coverage.

2. Expanding Reach Across the Commonwealth

In addition to Cambridge, Comcast is expanding its broadband infrastructure upgrades to other cities, including Boston, Haverhill, Lowell, Somerville, and Springfield. This broad initiative reflects Comcast's commitment to improving digital access for residents in various communities across Massachusetts.

MBI Director and General Counsel Michael Baldino stated, “This project is the latest milestone in our efforts to expand digital opportunity across Massachusetts. By installing state-of-the-art broadband wiring and network equipment in places like Just A Start, we’re ensuring residents have access to high-performance Internet. In turn, this gives them the tools to stay connected in today’s digital world.”

3. Partnership with Just A Start

Carolyne Hannan, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s New England Region, emphasized the importance of this partnership with MBI, stating, “Through this partnership, residents in public and affordable housing properties across the Commonwealth will have access to today’s best broadband technology.” At Just A Start, the upgraded infrastructure provides residents with multi-gig speeds and comprehensive WiFi coverage, significantly enhancing their online experience.

Carl Nagy-Koechlin, Executive Director of Just A Start, expressed enthusiasm about the benefits of the broadband updates, noting, “Our Just A Start residents have been delighted with the broadband updates. This program opens doors for educational resources, job opportunities, and community engagement.”

4. A Commitment to Digital Equity

The Residential Retrofit Program, launched in February 2024, has allocated nearly $70 million to enhance Internet infrastructure in over 40,000 public and affordable housing units across Massachusetts. The funding for this initiative comes from the U.S. Treasury’s Capital Projects Fund through the American Rescue Plan Act, and it is administered by MBI.

Comcast’s ongoing commitment to community support at Just A Start includes $110,000 in grants over the past three years for workforce development and the distribution of hundreds of new laptops to residents, aimed at fostering digital opportunities.

5. Conclusion

Comcast’s broadband infrastructure upgrades represent a crucial step toward enhancing digital equity and connectivity in Massachusetts. By investing in public and affordable housing, Comcast, along with state officials and MBI, is working to ensure that all residents have the necessary tools to thrive in an increasingly digital world. As this initiative unfolds, it promises to yield significant benefits for communities statewide, fostering educational and economic opportunities for residents.
