IBM Partners with Penn State to Launch AI Virtual Assistant for Student Success

On February 17, 2025, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Penn State University, one of the top-ranked universities globally, to develop an innovative AI-powered virtual assistant named MyResource. Designed using IBM's watsonx portfolio, this generative AI assistant aims to enhance the academic experience for nearly 90,000 students at Penn State by providing streamlined access to essential campus resources.

The initiative was sparked by input from student leaders at Penn State, who recognized a significant demand for improved access to vital services such as academic advising, health and wellness support, and financial aid assistance. An analysis conducted by the university corroborated these findings, leading to the collaboration with IBM to create a concierge service that would help students navigate the wealth of resources available to them.

She expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting how the integration of generative AI would help foster a more student-centered experience, eliminate barriers, and improve retention rates. The AI will also include guardrails to detect and filter out potentially harmful language or sensitive data, maintaining a safe and supportive environment for users.

Moreover, the use of watsonx Discovery's conversational search capabilities will enhance the quality and accuracy of the responses generated by MyResource, creating a reliable tool for students seeking information on campus services.
