On May 6, 2025, Exelon Corporation announced the opening of applications for its Climate Change Investment Initiative (2c2i) for 2026. This initiative, which focuses on investing in innovative startups that develop clean energy and environmentally sustainable technologies, aims to merge the social and environmental impact objectives of the Exelon Foundation with the investment strategies typical of venture capital.

1. A Commitment to Innovation

Since its inception in 2019, the 2c2i program has expanded to include 34 active companies in its portfolio, many led by diverse and inclusive teams from various backgrounds. Notably, 15 of these companies are located within Exelon’s operational footprint, highlighting the company’s commitment to fostering local innovation.

Exelon recently announced the addition of three new companies to its portfolio, each recognized for their innovative approaches to tackling climate change:

  1. Salient Predictions: This startup utilizes advanced machine learning algorithms combined with ocean and land-surface data to deliver highly accurate sub seasonal-to-seasonal weather forecasts, with projections extending from one day to one year in advance.
  1. SusMaX: Through a patented thermochemical process, SusMaX recycles waste coal ash, historically sent to landfills, into high-performance lightweight aggregates for concrete applications. This not only addresses environmental issues associated with coal ash but also enhances the supply chain of construction materials.
  1. Zero Homes: This vertical software company has developed a remote design platform that digitizes homes, allowing for efficient design and quoting of heat pumps. By eliminating the need for in-home visits, Zero Homes offers higher quality, affordable designs, and partners with contractors nationwide to streamline the installation process for homeowners.

Sunny Elebua, Exelon’s Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the new additions, stating, "Exelon is thrilled to welcome our newest portfolio companies to 2c2i. These startups are at the forefront of developing climate solutions for the communities we serve. Our collaboration with these innovative companies continues to produce positive outcomes for our communities and to challenge us to think creatively in pursuit of better climate solutions for all."

2. How to Apply for Funding

Startups interested in applying for the 2c2i program must demonstrate their potential to benefit one or more of Exelon’s six major markets: Atlantic City, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Wilmington, Del. Applications are open until September 15, 2025. Eligible projects should aim to:

  • Mitigate greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Enhance urban infrastructure resilience against climate challenges;
  • Assist communities in adapting to climate change; or
  • Support specific sustainability and climate goals set by states or cities.

Further details can be found on the Exelon Foundation's website.

3. Celebrating Success Stories

The 2c2i portfolio comprises startups that share a commitment to combating climate change and ensuring healthy environments for communities. One notable success story is Carbon Reform, a startup founded in early 2020. Carbon Reform developed the Carbon Capsule®, a modular device designed to capture CO₂ from indoor air while filtering other contaminants. In July 2024, the company installed its technology at Exelon's BGE Spring Garden building, demonstrating how improved indoor air quality can lead to significant energy savings.

4. A $20 Million Commitment to Sustainability

Exelon remains steadfast in its dedication to investing in clean energy and sustainability-focused initiatives, committing $20 million to support innovative startups through the 2c2i program. This initiative not only paves the way for groundbreaking technologies but also contributes to a sustainable future for all.
