1. Empowering Future Generations

On February 22, 2025, ComEd, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, took a significant step towards fostering diversity in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) during its annual Black History Month celebration. The company hosted the ComEd STEM Labs event, specifically aimed at high school students from diverse backgrounds, to encourage them to explore careers in clean energy and technology.

2. A Hands-On Experience

Fifty local high school students from the Chicagoland area participated in the event held at ComEd’s North Chicago facility. Under the guidance of ComEd mentors, students engaged in hands-on activities that included building their own solar-powered battery chargers. This experiential learning not only aimed to teach students about solar generation but also to introduce them to various STEM careers available within ComEd.

Melissa Washington, Senior Vice President of Customer Operations and Strategic Initiatives at ComEd, emphasized the importance of such programs in her remarks: “ComEd is committed to developing the next generation of STEM leaders by providing opportunities for local high school students to build their experience and confidence in the space as they chart their own career paths.”

3. Bridging the STEM Workforce Gap

The event aligns with broader demographic trends that highlight a disparity in representation within the STEM workforce. Although Black Americans account for 12% of the U.S. workforce, only 9% of STEM professionals are Black. Moreover, just 7% of Black Americans in STEM hold at least a bachelor’s degree. Research from the National Science Foundation indicates that increased exposure to STEM disciplines for Black high school students can significantly enhance their likelihood of pursuing related careers.

ComEd’s initiative seeks to address these disparities by inspiring local talent in northern Illinois to pursue STEM education, which not only leads to lucrative careers but also strengthens the communities they serve.

4. Investing in Education and Community

Each student who completed the ComEd STEM Labs program received a $250 scholarship, further incentivizing them to continue their education in STEM fields. ComEd's commitment to community engagement extends beyond this event; the company also sponsors additional educational programs such as the Construct Youth Academy, Tools of the Trade, Future of Energy Scholarships, and After School Matters. These initiatives focus on providing diverse groups of students with broader exposure to the possibilities within STEM.

5. Looking to the Future

With the ongoing electrification of daily life and the increasing integration of data and technology, the demand for STEM professionals is expected to grow. ComEd STEM Labs serves as a critical platform for preparing students in northern Illinois to become leaders in the clean energy transition, thereby jumpstarting their interest and educational paths in STEM.

As ComEd continues to build a diverse and skilled workforce that reflects the communities it serves, its commitment to nurturing the next generation of STEM leaders remains steadfast.
