ComEd's Restoration Efforts Continue After Severe Weather in Northern Illinois
1. Power Restoration Progress Amidst Holiday Weekend
In a press release dated July 5, 2026, Exelon Corporation’s subsidiary, ComEd, reported that it has successfully restored power to over 240,000 customers following a series of severe storms that battered northern Illinois. The restoration efforts come after four rounds of extreme weather that began on Thursday night, affecting nearly 297,000 customers across the region. As of Sunday at 11:30 a.m., ComEd confirmed that more than 283,000 customers had their power restored, with about 14,000 still awaiting service.
2. Impacted Areas and Restoration Efforts
The storms hit particularly hard in ComEd's north and south regions, with communities such as Tinley Park, Burbank, Homewood, and several southern wards in Chicago experiencing significant disruptions. Extensive tree damage and the need to rebuild portions of the electric grid have complicated restoration efforts in these areas.
More than 1,900 personnel and contractors from ComEd are engaged in restoration activities, working tirelessly in shifts around the clock to ensure that all customers have their electricity reinstated as safely and quickly as possible.
David Perez, Executive Vice President and COO of ComEd, expressed gratitude for the dedication of the crews, stating, “We’ve seen an unprecedented series of storms move through northern Illinois over the last few days, each bringing new damage to communities that were already working to recover. Our crews are out in force and will continue working safely through the holiday weekend to get every customer restored as quickly as possible.”
3. Public Safety and Customer Support
ComEd has emphasized the importance of public safety amid these restoration efforts. The company has urged customers to remain vigilant, providing guidelines for reporting downed power lines and avoiding hazardous situations around restoration crews.
Customers are encouraged to contact ComEd immediately if they experience a power outage, with multiple channels available for reporting issues. They can text OUT to 26633 (COMED), call 1-800-EDISON1 (1-800-334-7661), or visit ComEd’s website to report outages. A new Outage Tracker has also been introduced, allowing customers to check estimated restoration times, crew status updates, and view an outage map.
For a more convenient experience, ComEd has rolled out a mobile app for both iPhone and Android devices, enabling customers to handle account management and report outages easily.
4. Looking Ahead
As restoration efforts continue through the holiday weekend, ComEd remains committed to restoring power to the remaining customers. The company has expressed appreciation for the patience shown by customers during this challenging time and reiterated its dedication to ensuring public safety and service reliability.
With nearly 11 million customers served across its territories, Exelon Corporation and its subsidiaries like ComEd play a crucial role in providing energy solutions and maintaining infrastructure resilience in the face of increasingly severe weather patterns.
