Coupang, Inc. (NYSE: CPNG) has released its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2026, revealing a mixed performance amid challenging market conditions. The report highlights growth in revenues but significant losses on the profit side, raising questions about the company's operational efficiency and strategic direction.

1. Consolidated Financial Highlights

Coupang's total net revenues reached $8.5 billion, representing an 8% year-over-year (YoY) increase when measured in both reported and constant currency. However, the company faced a decline in gross profit, which was recorded at $2.3 billion, down 1% YoY. This resulted in a gross profit margin of 27.0%, a decrease of 228 basis points from the previous year.

In terms of profitability, Coupang reported an operating loss of $(242) million, which marked a significant decline of $396 million compared to the same quarter last year. The net income attributable to Coupang stockholders stood at $(266) million, a drop of $373 million YoY. Diluted earnings per share (EPS) was reported at $(0.15), down from $0.06 in Q1 2025.

The company's adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was $29 million, with a margin of just 0.3%, a stark decrease of 449 basis points compared to the prior year. Operating cash flow for the trailing twelve months decreased to $1.6 billion, down $425 million YoY, while free cash flow fell to $301 million, representing a decline of $724 million YoY.

In a noteworthy capital allocation move, Coupang repurchased 20.4 million shares of Class A common stock in the quarter, totaling $391 million. The Board of Directors has approved an additional $1 billion for the stock repurchase program, signaling a commitment to enhancing shareholder value.

2. Segment Performance

Product Commerce Segment

The Product Commerce segment generated $7.2 billion in net revenues, reflecting a 4% YoY increase on a reported basis and 5% YoY in constant currency. The gross profit for this segment was $2.2 billion, a slight increase of 1% YoY, while the gross profit margin decreased to 30.3%, down 101 basis points from the previous year.

Despite the revenue growth, the segment's adjusted EBITDA saw a decline of $192 million YoY, landing at $358 million with a margin of 5.0%, down 302 basis points YoY. The number of active customers in the Product Commerce segment grew to 23.9 million, up 2% YoY, and net revenues per active customer increased by 2%, reaching $300.

Developing Offerings Segment

The Developing Offerings segment performed notably better, with net revenues of $1.3 billion, marking an impressive 28% YoY increase on a reported basis and 25% YoY in constant currency. However, the gross profit declined to $123 million, down 25% YoY, indicating some operational challenges.

The adjusted EBITDA losses in this segment widened to $329 million, an increase of $161 million YoY, highlighting the need for strategic adjustments to enhance profitability.

3. Conclusion

Coupang's Q1 2026 results portray a company at a crossroads, balancing revenue growth against significant losses and declining margins. While the increase in net revenues and active customers in the Product Commerce segment is encouraging, the overall financial health reflects challenges that the company needs to address. The ongoing stock repurchase program may provide some support to stockholder confidence, but strategic operational improvements will be essential for Coupang to navigate the competitive landscape ahead. Investors will be keenly watching the company’s next moves as it seeks to turn its fortunes around in the coming quarters.
