Abu Dhabi, UAE – May 16, 2025 – In a significant move that promises to enhance the global supply chain for critical minerals, Tawazun Council, aerospace and defense powerhouse RTX (NYSE: RTX), and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at establishing gallium production capabilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This initiative positions the UAE to become the world's second-largest producer of gallium, a crucial mineral utilized across various high-tech industries.

1. Gallium: The Metal of the Future

Gallium is gaining traction as an essential resource in sectors like semiconductors, electric vehicles, medical devices, and telecommunications infrastructure. Its significance is particularly pronounced in the defense sector, where it plays a vital role in advanced radar systems and other defense technologies. This new partnership aims not only to secure a stable supply of gallium for RTX and other companies but also to bolster the UAE's industrial capabilities.

Paolo Dal Cin, Senior Vice President for Operations and Supply Chain at RTX, commented on the agreement: "The aerospace and defense industry relies on stable access to rare earth elements. Today's agreement puts us on a path towards a reliable supply of gallium, needed for production of critical aerospace and defense solutions."

2. A New Frontier in Gallium Production

The agreement includes plans for a feasibility study to assess the establishment of a high-purity gallium plant at EGA's Al Taweelah alumina refinery. This facility processes bauxite ore into alumina, the key input for aluminum smelting. Given that gallium is typically found in trace amounts within bauxite, the refining process must be meticulously managed to ensure the necessary purity levels for demanding applications.

His Excellency Dr. Nasser Humaid Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of Tawazun Council, hailed the project as a pivotal milestone that will position the UAE as a global leader in gallium production. He emphasized the metal's importance in various advanced applications, stating, "Gallium is an important metal for the most advanced electronics systems but remains commercially challenging to produce."

3. Economic and Strategic Implications

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration, noting that it aligns with the UAE’s industrial growth strategy, Operation 300bn. He remarked, "This agreement makes the development of a new source of gallium in the UAE feasible, creating an additional revenue stream for EGA and a new industrial capability for the UAE."

This partnership not only aims to secure a critical supply for RTX but also opens up avenues for economic diversification and enhances the UAE’s standing in the global minerals market. The collaboration underscores the increasing importance of critical minerals in modern economies and the geopolitical implications of securing stable supplies.

4. Conclusion

As the world pivots toward electrification and advanced technologies, the demand for gallium is expected to surge. The MoU between Tawazun Council, RTX, and EGA is a strategic step toward ensuring that the UAE plays a pivotal role in this emerging landscape. This initiative is set to enhance the operational capabilities of the aerospace and defense sectors while simultaneously contributing to the UAE’s economic growth and sustainability goals.

With this collaboration, the UAE not only strengthens its industrial base but also positions itself as a key player in the global supply of critical minerals, paving the way for future advancements and innovations in various high-tech sectors.
