Sales Performance

Home Depot's sales growth was primarily driven by contributions from the GMS segment, which added $1.3 billion following its acquisition in September 2025. Online sales accounted for 16.5% of total net sales, marking a significant year-over-year increase of 10.5%. The weaker U.S. dollar also had a favorable impact on net sales, contributing an estimated $220 million.

Comparable sales saw a modest increase of 0.6%, driven by a 2.2% rise in the average ticket, even as customer transactions declined by 1.3%. Notably, major departments like Storage & Organization, Power, and Plumbing reported positive comparable sales.

Gross Profit and Operating Expenses

The gross profit for the quarter rose by 2.4% to $13.8 billion, with a gross profit margin of 33.0%, slightly down from 33.8% the previous year. Operating expenses increased by 5.7% to $8.0 billion, with selling, general, and administrative expenses constituting 19.1% of net sales.

The increase in depreciation and amortization also contributed to the rise in operating expenses, which totaled $841 million for the quarter.

Interest and Taxes

Interest and other expenses totaled $604 million, equating to 1.4% of net sales. The effective income tax rate experienced a minor increase to 24.9%, up from 24.4% in the prior year. Consequently, diluted earnings per share saw a decrease to $3.30, down from $3.45 in the same quarter last year.

2. Liquidity and Capital Resources

As of May 3, 2026, Home Depot reported $1.6 billion in cash and cash equivalents. The company remains confident in its liquidity position, which is bolstered by strong operational cash flow and access to capital markets to meet operational needs and service debt.

Capital expenditures for the first quarter amounted to $844 million, with an overall investment plan of approximately $4 billion for fiscal 2026.
