DoorDash and Wing Launch Drone Delivery in Charlotte
Innovative Partnership Enhances Local Food Delivery Options
On May 14, 2025, DoorDash Inc., a key player in local commerce, announced the exciting expansion of its partnership with Wing, a leader in residential drone delivery, to introduce drone delivery services in Charlotte, North Carolina. This initiative marks a significant milestone in their collaborative efforts to provide customers with faster, more efficient, and sustainable food delivery options.
1. Drone Delivery Begins in Charlotte
Starting today, eligible DoorDash customers within a four-mile radius of The Arboretum Shopping Center in southern Charlotte can select from a curated menu of local and national restaurants to have their meals delivered by drone. Notable offerings include popular local spots such as Curry Junction, Matcha Cafe Maiko, Joa Korean food, and the first national partner for drone delivery in the city, Panera Bread. To celebrate the launch, Panera Bread is offering a special promotion of a $1 bowl of their iconic mac & cheese through the DoorDash app for a limited time.
2. A Growing Partnership
The expansion into Charlotte builds on the successful partnership that began in 2022 when DoorDash and Wing launched drone delivery operations in Australia. Since then, the service has broadened to various locations in the U.S., including parts of Southwest Virginia and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Both companies have plans to extend their drone delivery services to additional neighborhoods later this year.
Harrison Shih, Head of Product for DoorDash Labs, expressed excitement about the launch, stating, “Autonomous delivery will help shape the future of local logistics...there’s something special about watching your order arrive by air in minutes.”
3. DoorDash Labs: Pioneering Autonomous Solutions
This innovative partnership is a product of DoorDash Labs, the company’s robotics and automation division. DoorDash Labs is committed to exploring and integrating autonomous solutions to enhance customer experiences, boost demand for local businesses, and create more earning opportunities for Dashers. In addition to its collaboration with Wing, DoorDash is also working with Coco Robotics to develop sidewalk robot delivery services, underscoring its dedication to building a multi-modal delivery platform.
4. Embracing Technological Advancements
The introduction of drone delivery in Charlotte is not just a technological advancement; it's a reflection of North Carolina's historical association with aviation, famously known as the “First in Flight.” The state's progressive policies and local support have created an ideal environment for the integration of drone delivery technology, allowing DoorDash and Wing to effectively serve local communities.
Wing has been a pioneer in drone delivery, launching America’s first commercial service in rural Virginia in 2019 and later expanding to major metropolitan areas. With the introduction of delivery services to Charlotte, Wing is set to make a significant impact in urban drone logistics.
5. DashMart by Drone: Expanding Delivery Options
In addition to food delivery, Charlotte residents will now have access to DashMart by Drone, offering an array of drinks, snacks, and essential items that can be delivered swiftly by drone. This service features a collaboration with local favorites such as Life Raft Treats and Appalachia Cookie Co., alongside a limited-time bundle giveaway.
How It Works
Eligible residents can easily access drone delivery through the DoorDash app. By clicking the “Drone” icon, users can browse participating restaurants. If their selected items meet the size and weight criteria, they can opt for drone delivery during checkout. Live tracking updates will keep customers informed as their orders approach.
For those interested in drone delivery but currently ineligible, a waitlist option is available at wing.com/charlotte to receive notifications when more neighborhoods are included.
6. Community Impact and Future Growth
The launch of drone delivery services in Charlotte signifies a pivotal moment for both DoorDash and Wing, as they strive to meet the growing demand for convenience and speed in food delivery. Paul Herndon, President of American Asset Corporation, expressed the significance of The Arboretum Shopping Center hosting this innovative operation, calling it an exciting development for the community.
As DoorDash and Wing continue to expand their partnership, they remain focused on enhancing customer experiences while supporting local businesses and meeting evolving consumer expectations. With Charlotte now on the map for drone delivery, both companies are poised to redefine the landscape of local logistics and food delivery in the years to come.
