Roblox Corp. Implements Age Checks for Chat Access: A Pioneering Move in Online Safety

In a significant step towards enhancing user safety, Roblox Corporation (NYSE: RBLX) has announced that starting January 7, 2026, all users in the United States will be required to complete an age verification process to access chat features on the platform. This initiative, which will roll out globally over the next week, positions Roblox as the first major online gaming platform to enforce age checks for chat functionalities, thereby reinforcing its commitment to safeguarding its community.

Roblox has been proactive in its approach to user safety, having initially introduced age checks for chat access in December 2025 in select countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The company reported that over 50% of daily active users in those regions have already completed the age check, with tens of millions of users worldwide participating in this process. Matt Kaufman, Roblox's Chief Safety Officer, emphasized the company's dedication to user protection: “Our commitment to safety is rooted in delivering the highest level of protection for our users.”

The age verification process has been designed to be quick, private, and secure. Users can complete the age check through the Roblox app by using their device’s camera in just a few seconds. The technology utilized, known as Facial Age Estimation, securely processes images through a third-party vendor, Persona, and ensures that all data is deleted immediately after processing.

For users aged 13 and above, there is an option for ID verification to confirm their age. While the age check is not mandatory, users who wish to access chat features must complete it. In cases where users believe their age has been inaccurately assessed, Roblox has established customer support systems and appeal processes, allowing for alternative verification methods such as parental controls.

Upon successful completion of the age check, users are categorized into one of six age groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. This classification dictates the chat capabilities of each user. For instance, users aged 9-12 can communicate with their peers in their age group, as well as those in adjacent groups. To protect the youngest users on the platform, chat features will be disabled by default for children under 9, unless consent is provided by a parent following the age check.

Roblox has also rolled out enhanced parental controls that provide guardians with greater oversight of their children's online activity. Parents can easily check their child’s age-check status and modify their birthday if necessary. The Roblox Safety Center serves as a comprehensive resource for parents, offering guidance on setting up parental controls and making informed decisions about their child's gaming experience.

The implementation of age checks for chat access is part of Roblox's larger safety strategy, which encompasses strict communication rules for minors, proactive content moderation, and robust parental controls.
