In a significant move to enhance its operational efficiency, Staples has successfully implemented Manhattan Associates' cutting-edge Manhattan Active® Warehouse Management (WM) system across nine of its U.S.-based B2B fulfillment centers. This transformation, achieved in just 18 months, marks a pivotal step in Staples' ongoing commitment to streamline warehouse processes and improve order accuracy. The company plans to have its remaining fulfillment centers operational on Manhattan Active WM by the end of 2026.

1. Enhancing Warehouse Operations

Staples selected Manhattan Active WM to address several key challenges within its fulfillment operations. The solution aims to minimize picking and order errors while enhancing overall order and inventory management processes. The advanced warehouse management system, known for its seamless integration capabilities, stands in stark contrast to legacy platforms, which have become increasingly complex and time-consuming to manage.

Staples operates an extensive fulfillment network, employing around 6,000 associates who are responsible for picking, packing, and shipping approximately 2.5 million units daily from a vast network of 36 fulfillment centers and 220 delivery locations. This network utilizes an impressive 12 million square feet of warehouse, storage, sorting, and delivery space, positioning Staples as a formidable player in the B2B and B2C markets.

2. A Strategic Investment in Technology

Ryan Hanson, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Staples, expressed the company's commitment to investing in innovative solutions that enhance customer service. "With our broad and deep supply chain network, capabilities, and expertise, Staples today services over 98% of the U.S. with next-day delivery," he stated. "We place a high premium on system performance and uptime reliability to exceed customer expectations. With a robust, cloud solution that addresses not only the present but future operational and integration needs, we’ve only begun to tap into opportunities to drive efficiency and maximize the operator experience."

3. Leveraging Cutting-Edge Automation

A key highlight of this initiative is Staples' integration of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) within its fulfillment centers. Stewart Gantt, Executive Vice President of Professional Services at Manhattan Associates, commented on the significance of this technology. "Their innovative use of AMRs fully leverages Manhattan’s embedded Warehouse Execution System (WES) to quickly connect to a wide range of Material Handling Equipment (MHE)."

Manhattan Active WM is distinguished as the first cloud-native warehouse management system designed to unify all aspects of distribution planning and execution. Built on a modern microservices architecture, it offers enhanced supply chain efficiency, visibility, and agility. As part of this initiative, Staples will utilize the system to manage some of its most complex and highly automated facilities, which will ultimately encompass 14 locations and feature over 2,000 autonomous guided vehicles and robotics.

4. The Future of Fulfillment

This partnership between Staples and Manhattan Associates signifies a transformative approach to distribution technology, emphasizing an intuitive user experience while optimizing operational capabilities. As Staples continues to integrate advanced technologies into its fulfillment operations, the company is well-positioned to meet the evolving demands of its diverse customer base, which includes businesses, entrepreneurs, remote workers, and educators.

In conclusion, the successful implementation of Manhattan Active WM is a testament to Staples' dedication to enhancing its supply chain operations and maintaining its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving marketplace. As the company gears up to complete the rollout across all its fulfillment centers, the industry will be watching closely to see how these advancements translate into improved service and efficiency.
