In a significant move to bolster its manufacturing capabilities, Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) announced today that it has signed an agreement to acquire a new manufacturing facility in the Dayton, Ohio area. This facility, spanning over 700,000 square feet, is poised to play a crucial role in Joby’s ambitious plans to double its aircraft production to four units per month by 2027.

1. A Strategic Acquisition

The newly acquired facility is ready for immediate use and will initially support Joby’s production goals while also allowing for substantial future growth. This expansion complements Joby’s existing manufacturing sites in California and Ohio, with operations expected to commence later this year.

JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “This site will not only support our near-term plan to double production, but it can also serve as a base for significant future growth, as we turn a decade of engineering into the manufacturing scale the market is now demanding.”

2. Ohio: The Heart of Aerospace Innovation

Joby’s expansion into Ohio is a testament to the state’s historical significance in aviation and its ongoing commitment to reindustrialization. Bevirt highlighted Dayton’s legacy, saying, “From the world’s first aircraft factory to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton has long been the epicenter of aerospace innovation, and we’re proud to be building the next generation of flight right here.”

The acquisition has garnered support from various political figures in Ohio, who see it as a pivotal moment for the state’s manufacturing sector. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine remarked, “Joby's expanded manufacturing presence in Vandalia and the Miami Valley brings together our state's rich aviation heritage with our world-class advanced manufacturing workforce.”

3. Political Support for Joby’s Growth

The expansion has been met with enthusiastic support from local and state officials. Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) emphasized Joby’s investment in the region, stating it would create thousands of well-paying blue-collar jobs. He noted, “Joby’s investment in Dayton is an incredible testament to Ohio’s long history as a leader in aviation and to the manufacturing renaissance happening all across the states.”

Similarly, Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) praised the expansion, stating, “Joby’s expansion builds on Dayton’s legacy as the birthplace of aviation while shaping the future of flight.” He expressed excitement about the new jobs it will bring and the innovation that will emerge from the facility.

4. A Promising Future for Advanced Air Mobility

Joby Aviation’s growth in Ohio aligns with a broader national trend towards advanced air mobility (AAM), a sector that has gained momentum through supportive policies. Recently, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced a national strategy for AAM that provides a clear roadmap for accelerating deployment and integration. This strategy, coupled with the Federal Aviation Administration’s upcoming eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP) in 2026, positions Joby favorably as it prepares for the future of air travel.

J.P. Nauseef, President and CEO of JobsOhio, commented on Joby’s decision to expand in the state: “As the world’s leading advanced air mobility company, Joby's decision to double down in Ohio speaks to the speed at which advanced technologies can scale in our state.”

5. Joby Aviation: A Leader in Electric Air Mobility

Founded in California, Joby Aviation is developing an all-electric, vertical take-off and landing air taxi service, intending to operate its service in cities around the world while also selling its aircraft to partners. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it at the forefront of the evolving transportation landscape.

As Joby continues to expand its manufacturing capacities, the company remains focused on its overarching goal of making urban air mobility a reality, redefining how people and goods move through our cities.

The acquisition of the Dayton facility marks a significant milestone in Joby’s journey, setting the stage for increased production capabilities and a reinforced commitment to American manufacturing in the aerospace sector.
