1. Strong Revenue Growth Driven by Mega Projects

Herc Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HRI), a prominent player in the equipment rental industry, released its financial results for the first quarter of 2025, showcasing a 7% increase in total revenues, which reached $861 million compared to $804 million during the same period last year. This growth was largely attributed to the rise in equipment rental revenue, which saw a $20 million uptick, alongside a $36 million increase in sales of rental equipment.

Larry Silber, the company’s president and CEO, highlighted the complex operating environment, stating, “The 2025 operating landscape continues to be a tale of two disparate economic trends.” While federal and private funding for large construction projects, such as data centers and LNG facilities, bolstered the national account business, other sectors, particularly those sensitive to interest rates, faced delays that hampered local account growth.

2. Financial Performance Overview

Key Financial Metrics

  • Total Revenues: $861 million (up from $804 million in Q1 2024)
  • Dollar Utilization: Decreased to 37.6% from 39.7% in the previous year
  • Direct Operating Expenses: Increased to $327 million, accounting for 44.2% of equipment rental revenue
  • Depreciation of Rental Equipment: Rose by 8% to $172 million
  • Net Loss: $18 million, a significant shift from net income of $65 million in Q1 2024
  • Adjusted Net Income: Decreased 45% to $37 million, or $1.30 per diluted share

Notably, the company reported a substantial increase in transaction expenses, which soared to $74 million from just $3 million in the prior-year period due to costs associated with the ongoing acquisition of H&E Equipment Services, Inc.

Adjusted EBITDA and Margins

Despite the challenges, Herc’s adjusted EBITDA held steady at $339 million, although the adjusted EBITDA margin contracted to 39.4% from 42.2% year-over-year. Silber remarked, “Our diversified business model helps drive resiliency,” indicating the company’s ability to navigate the uneven economic landscape.

3. Capital Management and Fleet Expansion

Herc Holdings demonstrated disciplined capital management, opening three new greenfield locations in the first quarter. The total fleet value reached approximately $6.9 billion at original equipment cost (OEC), with a 9% increase in the average fleet size compared to the previous year. The average fleet age remained consistent at 47 months.

The company’s net rental equipment capital expenditures were $93 million, a slight decrease from $120 million in the prior-year period, showcasing a focus on strategic investments.

4. Outlook for 2025

Looking ahead, Herc Holdings affirmed its full-year 2025 guidance for equipment rental revenue growth, projected between 4% and 6%. The company anticipates adjusted EBITDA in the range of $1.575 billion to $1.650 billion, with net rental equipment capital expenditures estimated between $400 million and $600 million.

Silber expressed optimism about the company’s positioning within the construction sector, stating, “As a leader in an industry where scale matters, we expect to continue to gain share by capturing an outsized position of the forecasted higher construction spending in 2025.”

5. Dividend Announcement and Financial Stability

In a move to reward shareholders, Herc Holdings declared a quarterly dividend of $0.70, marking a 5% increase. This dividend was payable to shareholders of record as of February 18, 2025, reinforcing the company’s commitment to returning value to its investors.

As of March 31, 2025, Herc Holdings maintained a net debt of $4.0 billion with a net leverage ratio of 2.5x, reflecting stability amid ongoing operational investments. The company reported approximately $1.9 billion in liquidity, bolstered by cash and cash equivalents along with unused commitments under its ABL Credit Facility.

6. Conclusion

Herc Holdings Inc. is navigating a challenging economic landscape characterized by mixed demand across various sectors. The company’s strategic focus on growth through acquisitions and capital management positions it well to capitalize on future opportunities in the construction industry. As Herc continues to adapt to the evolving market, its ability to balance growth with operational efficiency will be key to its success in 2025 and beyond.
