The company is organized into three primary business segments: Rail North America, Rail International, and Portfolio Management, alongside a smaller segment focused on tank container leasing known as Trifleet. B. Operations
GATX Rail Business Overview
GATX operates one of the largest railcar leasing fleets in the world, comprising approximately 148,500 railcars. The fleet includes diverse types of railcars—tank cars, freight cars, and locomotives—leased primarily to customers in industries such as petroleum, chemical, transportation, and food/agriculture sectors. The company serves nearly 600 different commodities, showcasing the versatility of its railcar fleet.
Rail North America
This segment encompasses operations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Rail North America specializes in full-service leases, which include railcar maintenance and ancillary services. Railcars in this fleet have an estimated economic lifespan between 27 to 45 years, with an average age of about 18 years. GATX serves a broad customer base, consisting of approximately 840 clients. In 2023, revenues from individual customers were diversified, with no single client generating more than 5% of total lease revenue.
Rail North America primarily competes on factors such as railcar availability, maintenance capabilities, cost structures, customer relationships, and engineering expertise. Major competitors include Union Tank Car Company and Trinity Industries Leasing Company. The segment is also involved in sourcing new railcars from numerous manufacturers, including Trinity Rail Group and Greenbrier Companies.
In recent years, GATX has executed significant supply agreements for new railcars, ensuring fleet refreshment to meet market demand. Such agreements include a contract with Trinity for 15,000 newly built railcars with specific delivery schedules.
Rail International
Rail International includes operational branches in Europe and India, previously extending to Russia until early 2023. In Europe, GATX Rail Europe (GRE) operates a fleet of 29,216 railcars leased to approximately 260 customers. With lease terms generally spanning from one to ten years, GRE competes with local players like VTG Aktiengesellschaft and offers a full-service leasing model.
In India, Rail India operates with a fleet of 8,805 railcars, under net leases where customers assume maintenance responsibilities. Contracts for 1,297 railcars have already been secured for 2024 delivery, indicating a proactive approach to expanding this segment.
Portfolio Management
This segment focuses on partnerships, particularly with Rolls-Royce in the leasing of aircraft spare engines. GATX Engine Leasing (GEL) is responsible for directly investing in and leasing aircraft spare engines, with 29 engines within its portfolio as of year-end 2023. The financial dynamics of this segment are shaped by leasing relationships with commercial aircraft operators and maintenance agreements with Rolls-Royce.
Other - Trifleet
Trifleet specializes in the ownership and management of tank containers, servicing approximately 300 customers in various industrial sectors. The estimated useful life of these assets is between 15 to 25 years, with current leasing terms ranging from one to five years. GATX has commitments in place for acquiring additional containers, reinforcing its position in this niche market.
C. Maintenance
GATX emphasizes a robust maintenance infrastructure to ensure the reliability and safety of its railcar portfolio. In North America, the company operates a network of maintenance facilities catering to the servicing needs of their fleet, which includes significant investments in both owned and third-party maintenance providers. Rail North America has six major maintenance facilities capable of comprehensive railcar services, supplemented by various third-party establishments for routine and specialized repairs, creating a comprehensive network dedicated to upholding high-quality standards.
In Europe, GRE operates a central maintenance facility in Poland that contributes to assembly and repair activities, alongside partnerships with local third-party service providers. This dual-approach maintains efficiency and quality across different operational regions.
D. Affiliates
GATX, as a co-founder of RailPulse LLC, is involved in developing telematics technology aimed at improving rail industry safety and efficiency. This venture showcases GATX’s commitment to advancing technological innovations in transportation.
