A. Company Overview
Ur-Energy Inc. is a Canadian-based corporation primarily engaged in uranium mining, recovery, and processing. Established on March 22, 2004, Ur-Energy is committed to the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of uranium mineral properties, primarily located in the United States. C. Operations
Lost Creek Project
The Lost Creek Project is situated in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, and is recognized as Ur-Energy's core asset. It is fully permitted and licensed, having secured operational approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. The project utilizes in situ recovery (ISR) methods, which offer cost-effective and environmentally responsible uranium extraction.
Construction of the Lost Creek processing facility began in 2012, with full-scale production and operational activities launching in 2013. The processing plant is designed to have the capacity to produce 2.2 million pounds of U3O8 annually, making it a key component of Ur-Energy's production strategy. The facility features advanced processing circuits for capturing, concentrating, drying, and packaging uranium yellowcake for market delivery.
The ISR extraction method employed at Lost Creek minimizes environmental impact by avoiding surface disturbances and tailings facilities. It involves injecting a mining solution into the mineralized zone, allowing the recovery of uranium-rich solutions that are processed on-site.
Shirley Basin Project
As part of the Pathfinder acquisition in 2013, Ur-Energy gained ownership of the Shirley Basin Project, which has a historical production record exceeding 28 million pounds of U3O8 from previous mining operations. The project is in the later stages of permitting, having received multiple authorizations to mine. Mining methods planned for Shirley Basin will also utilize ISR techniques, leveraging extensive historical geological data obtained through past explorations.
As of 2023, all major licensing requirements have been fulfilled for Shirley Basin. Further construction and operational plans are contingent upon market conditions and Ur-Energy's production and economic strategies.
Mineral Property Portfolio
In addition to its flagship Lost Creek and Shirley Basin projects, Ur-Energy holds a diversified portfolio of twelve mineral projects in Wyoming. This portfolio includes significant claims in the Great Divide Basin (GDB) and the Gas Hills Uranium District, accommodating both exploratory and operational potential. The projects are predominantly focused on roll-front style uranium mineralization amenable to ISR.
The mineral properties span approximately 48,000 acres, with properties subject to various regulatory and permitting requirements. Due to a strategic focus on the progression of Lost Creek and Shirley Basin, exploration activities in non-material projects have been deferred until market conditions improve.
D. Mining and Processing Techniques
Ur-Energy employs the ISR technique for uranium extraction, which is noted for its efficiency and lower environmental footprint. The ISR method uses injection wells to introduce a leaching solution (lixiviant) into the uranium-bearing formations, extracting uranium while minimizing direct environmental disturbance. The recovery process includes:
- Injection: The lixiviant, made of groundwater and added oxygen, is injected into the mineralized areas.
- Recovery: Uranium is dissolved in the lixiviant and extracted via production wells.
- Processing: The recovered solution undergoes ion exchange to concentrate uranium, which is then crystallized into yellowcake.
The processing plant at Lost Creek includes multiple production circuits, allowing for on-site finishing without the need for third-party services. This capability enhances Ur-Energy's control over production quality and logistics.
