Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern Celebrate America's 250th Anniversary with Big Boy No. 4014

On July 4, 2026, Philadelphia witnessed a significant historical event as Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive took center stage during the America250 Block Party, commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. This momentous occasion attracted tens of thousands of attendees who gathered to celebrate not only the milestone of the nation but also the rich heritage of railroads in shaping the United States.

The visit of Big Boy No. 4014 is part of a historic coast-to-coast tour that marks the locomotive's first journey on eastern rails since 1941. This ambitious tour, organized in partnership with Norfolk Southern, seeks to highlight the continued importance of freight rail to the U.S. economy. “Big Boy’s first-ever coast-to-coast journey reflects our proud history building communities and our commitment to the future,” said Union Pacific Railroad CEO Jim Vena. The ceremony in Philadelphia featured key speakers, including Vena, Norfolk Southern President and CEO Mark George, and Chellie Cameron, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia. The event also included a ceremonial driving of a Silver Spike, which traveled with Big Boy from Sacramento, California. This spike is a homage to the Golden Spike that connected the nation at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869. It commemorates the first-ever coast-to-coast Big Boy tour and will be featured in the Union Pacific Railroad Museum’s traveling Experience Car.

To add an immersive touch to the ceremony, an actor portrayed Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, who laid the cornerstone for the first commercial railroad in the U.S. on July 4, 1828. This connection to the nation’s founding underscored the vital role of railroads throughout American history.

The coast-to-coast tour features an exceptional collection of rail equipment, including Norfolk Southern’s historic Marco Polo rail car, which once served President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Additionally, the specialty locomotive “The Bell” pays tribute to the Liberty Bell and the Pennsylvania Railroad's role in transporting it across the country. Union Pacific has also included its commemorative locomotives – No. 1616 Abraham Lincoln and No. 1776-America250 – in this historic tour.

The coast-to-coast tour will conclude on July 29, 2026, after Big Boy travels approximately 7,000 miles across 14 states.
