Semtech Unveils Groundbreaking 5G RedCap Modem for Industrial IoT

The FX86E modem is designed specifically for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators in the industrial IoT landscape. By enabling organizations to connect devices and machinery to 5G RedCap, 4G/LTE, and both public and private networks, the FX86E eliminates the lengthy certification processes and additional engineering work typically associated with embedding cellular modules.

Larry Zibrik, Semtech's Vice President of Cellular Modules, emphasized the importance of reliable connectivity in industrial IoT applications. “Many industrial IoT applications don’t need complex connectivity platforms—they need reliable connectivity, and they need it fast,” he stated. The FX86E addresses this need by providing 5G RedCap throughput and longevity in a compact, easy-to-integrate modem.

One of the standout features of the FX86E is its compatibility with both 5G RedCap and 4G/LTE networks. The FX86E is built to military specifications (MIL-STD-810H) and features an IP30-rated enclosure, ensuring durability in demanding industrial environments. With a temperature operating range from -30° to +75°C (-22° to +167°F), the modem is equipped to handle a variety of conditions. Its compact design, measuring 82 x 60 x 32 mm, allows for seamless integration into existing systems without the need for redesign.

In terms of security, the FX86E incorporates secure boot protection and firmware over-the-air (FOTA) updates via secure HTTPS, ensuring that devices remain protected and updated throughout their operational lifecycle.

The FX86E modem integrates Semtech’s extensive expertise in wireless connectivity, and it is currently undergoing certification with major carriers globally.
