Oracle Partners with NATO CCDCOE to Enhance Battlefield Connectivity through 5G Solutions

The NATO CCDCOE, based in Tallinn, Estonia, serves as a multinational hub for cyber defense, supporting NATO and its member nations with expertise across technology, strategy, operations, and law. The center's ongoing research into 5G technology is pivotal for enhancing operational readiness within NATO, as it builds secure private networks that can withstand external cyber threats.

In a statement, Tõnis Saar, Director of CCDCOE, emphasized the importance of secure and resilient 5G networks: "Secure, resilient 5G adds a vital layer to existing communications, while portable, private networks with seamless roaming enable faster, more effective data sharing, keeping NATO forces a step ahead of adversaries."

The partnership builds upon the success of a pilot program where Oracle's 5G Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP) was verified as a trusted solution for securing 5G roaming communications across NATO member networks. The SEPP is a core component of Oracle's 5G Core portfolio, utilized by communications service providers (CSPs) globally to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of all 5G interconnect roaming messages.

Oracle's SEPP software was tested on a Druid 5G "Raemis" core network, leveraging Oracle Roving Edge Devices. This verification signifies Oracle's capability to assist NATO in safeguarding sensitive battlefield and research data while ensuring seamless, secure connectivity among allied forces.

Andrew Morawski, Executive Vice President and General Manager at Oracle Regulated Industries, remarked, "Safeguarding mission-critical and sensitive information over communications networks is paramount to national and global security. By bolstering 5G data security across roaming networks, Oracle technologies will help NATO forces enhance data integrity and gain operational advantages in high-stakes scenario planning and testing."

Liam Kenny, CEO of Druid Software, highlighted the importance of advanced 5G networks in delivering uncompromising data security. "The combination of our Raemis platform with Oracle's technologies provides NATO with secure and robust roaming and network federation capabilities, ensuring greater interoperability and operational superiority in high-pressure scenarios," he stated.

As an accredited NATO entity, the CCDCOE disseminates its research findings with NATO allies and like-minded nations for military applications, enhancing collaborative efforts in cyber defense.

Oracle Communications SEPP is equipped with advanced security measures, in line with the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) recommendations. Its firewall capabilities, combined with common practices such as encryption in transit and encryption at rest, ensure comprehensive protection against data exposure and attacks on storage media.
