Nuvve Holding Corp. Partners with ComEd and Resource Innovations to Launch V2G Pilot Program

The pilot program is designed to assess the environmental, societal, and grid impacts of integrating vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology into the operations of electric school buses. This innovative approach allows for the energy stored in the buses' batteries to be used to enhance grid stability and reduce energy costs during peak demand periods.

Hamza Lemsaddek, Vice President of Technology and Astrea AI at Nuvve, emphasized the potential of V2G technology, stating, “Nuvve’s cutting-edge V2G technology transforms electric vehicles into reliable, dispatchable, and monetizable mobile energy storage assets.” He further expressed excitement about the pilot's role in evaluating the value that electric school buses can provide to ComEd and its customer base.

The pilot is expected to involve three school districts that are already customers of Nuvve within ComEd's service area. By studying how to harness energy from the batteries of electric school buses, the partnership aims to bolster energy efficiency for both the school districts and the surrounding communities.

Scott Vogt, Vice President of Strategy and Energy Policy for ComEd, shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “ComEd is excited to launch the Vehicle-to-Grid pilot program in 2025 as we continue with our mission of delivering best-in-class reliability and customer solutions to advance the equitable adoption of EVs here in northern Illinois.” He noted the initiative’s alignment with the company’s broader goals of reducing emissions and upgrading fleets in a cost-effective manner.

ComEd's V2G pilot program is part of the company’s Beneficial Electrification investments, which include various customer rebate and education programs. These efforts are critical in meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles and their infrastructure. ComEd has already facilitated the installation of 3,500 EV charging ports and the addition of 200 EV fleet vehicles, including numerous school buses, since the launch of its EV programs.

These initiatives align with the state of Illinois’ Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which aims to have 1 million electric vehicles on the roads by 2030. Presently, there are over 126,000 registered EVs in Illinois, more than double the number reported in 2022.

Resource Innovations, a women-led energy transformation firm, is also playing a pivotal role in this collaboration.
