Nuvve Japan K.K., a subsidiary of Nuvve Holding Corp., has announced the initiation of an ambitious grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Oyada, Mino City, Gifu Prefecture. This project marks a significant step forward in the company’s efforts to enhance energy resilience and efficiency in Japan.

1. Project Overview

The new battery storage project will feature a robust rated output of 2MW and a substantial storage capacity of 8MWh, designed to provide 4 hours of continuous discharge. Operations are set to commence in November 2026, contributing to Nuvve Japan’s growing contract capacity, which now totals 6MW across its projects in the region.

Key Features of the Project

  1. Utilization of the Nuvve Platform

The project will leverage the advanced capabilities of the "Nuvve Platform," which has been successfully implemented in various markets across North America and Europe. This platform excels in aggregating diverse electric vehicles and stationary batteries, allowing for high-precision forecasting and bidding.

  • Market Participation: The platform will enhance Nuvve Japan’s engagement with the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) and the Frequency Response balancing market, enabling optimized revenue generation through arbitrage strategies and grid stability services.
  1. Technology from Sungrow

The battery system will incorporate cutting-edge technology from Sungrow, a recognized leader in battery solutions. This partnership ensures a high level of performance, safety, and reliability, critical for meeting the demands during peak evening hours.

2. Strategic Implications

Masa Higashida, CEO of Nuvve Japan, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This project represents another important step forward for Nuvve Japan as we continue to work closely with our partners to deploy high-value energy storage assets across the country.” He emphasized the company’s commitment to building a scalable portfolio that balances grid resilience with long-term commercial viability.

Gregory Poilasne, CEO of Nuvve, also highlighted the broader implications of this project, noting that it adds another revenue stream for the company, which will start generating income in late 2026. He remarked, “Together with our European battery projects, it creates a strong and growing revenue stream into late 2026 and early 2027.”

3. Conclusion

This new grid-scale battery storage project in Mino City represents a significant milestone for Nuvve Japan as it continues to strengthen its position in the energy market. By utilizing advanced technology and strategic market operations, Nuvve Japan is poised to contribute to the transition towards cleaner energy solutions and enhance the resilience of the electrical grid in Japan.

As Nuvve Japan prepares to launch operations, the company remains focused on creating sustainable energy solutions that align with global efforts to achieve a cleaner and more efficient energy landscape.
