Microsoft Partners with AFT to Launch National Academy for AI Instruction

In a historic collaboration aimed at revolutionizing education, Microsoft Corp. has announced the launch of the National Academy for AI Instruction, alongside the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), OpenAI, Anthropic, and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT). This ambitious $23 million initiative is set to provide accessible AI training and educational resources to approximately 1.8 million AFT members, with an initial focus on K-12 educators.

The National Academy for AI Instruction will be headquartered in a cutting-edge facility in Manhattan, designed to reshape how artificial intelligence is integrated into educational practices across the United States. This initiative seeks to fill a significant gap in structured AI training, enabling educators to effectively leverage AI in their classrooms while placing them at the forefront of its development and application.

Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, emphasized the importance of educator involvement in AI’s evolution, stating, "To best serve students, we must ensure teachers have a strong voice in the development and use of AI." He highlighted that this partnership aims not only to enhance teacher capabilities but also to guide tech companies in creating AI solutions that cater to students’ needs.

With rapid advancements in technology, teachers are facing unprecedented challenges in navigating AI's complexities. Randi Weingarten, President of AFT, remarked, "AI holds tremendous promise but huge challenges—and it's our job as educators to make sure AI serves our students and society, not the other way around." The inception of this academy stems from a collaboration initiated in late 2023 between Microsoft and the AFL-CIO, which included hosting symposiums aimed at addressing AI’s role in education. The direct involvement of the AFT, Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and the UFT underscores a commitment to developing a sustainable educational infrastructure that prioritizes teacher input and innovation.
