A. Company Overview
Founded in 1919 as Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana, Cummins Inc. has evolved into a prominent global power leader specializing in the design, manufacture, distribution, and servicing of diesel and natural gas engines as well as electric and hybrid powertrains. The company operates across a diversified portfolio of products including filtration systems, aftertreatment technologies, turbochargers, fuel systems, and various powertrain-related components. In 2001, the company was renamed Cummins Inc., marking a broadened scope beyond engines alone.
Cummins serves a wide customer base that includes original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), independent distributors, and dealers, with a presence in approximately 190 countries and territories. The company's products reach a vast global market through a network comprising about 450 wholly-owned, joint venture, and independent distributor locations, supplemented by over 19,000 Cummins certified dealer locations.
B. Meritor Acquisition
On August 3, 2022, Cummins completed its acquisition of Meritor for approximately $2.9 billion, which included the repayment of debt. The acquisition enabled the formation of two new business lines under its umbrella: an axles and brakes business, categorized under the Components segment, and an electric powertrain division, now part of the Accelera segment. The consolidation of Meritor's operations provides Cummins with enhanced capabilities in powertrain technologies.
C. Operating Segments
Cummins is structured into five complementary operating segments: Components, Engine, Distribution, Power Systems, and Accelera. Each segment works synergistically, sharing technology, customer bases, strategic partners, and a distribution network to better compete in their respective markets.
Components Segment
The Components segment focuses on supplementary products for the Engine and Power Systems segments, including drivetrain systems, emission solutions, and advanced filtration technologies. This segment has been realigned to better meet market demands and achieve operational efficiencies. Key product lines include:
- Axles and Brakes: Design and manufacture of drivetrain systems, catering primarily to commercial vehicles and industrial applications.
- Emission Solutions: Leader in aftertreatment technologies that address emissions compliance and improve fuel economy across various engine types.
- Engine Components: Development of turbochargers, fuel systems, and valvetrain technologies spanning multiple engine categories.
- Atmus: A newly rebranded entity specializing in filtration products including air and fuel filters, and coolant solutions.
- Automated Transmissions: Joint venture operations with Eaton to produce advanced transmission technologies.
- Software and Electronics: Development of control systems and specialty sensors for various applications.
Engine Segment
The Engine segment is dedicated to producing a spectrum of diesel and natural gas engines ranging from 2.8 to 15 liters in displacement. Key markets include heavy-duty trucks, medium-duty trucks, light-duty automotive, and an off-highway segment covering construction and agricultural machinery. Engine offerings and their respective applications are as follows:
- Heavy-Duty Truck Engines: Focused on global truck manufacturers, with engines ranging from 310 to 615 horsepower.
- Medium-Duty Truck and Bus Engines: Catering to applications in vocational vehicles and public transportation, with outputs between 130 and 450 horsepower.
- Light-Duty Automotive: Engines for pickup trucks and commercial vehicles.
- Off-Highway Applications: Serving diverse industrial markets with engines ranging from 48 to 715 horsepower.
Distribution Segment
The Distribution segment serves as the primary channel for sales and support, offering a wide range of products and services through a global network. This includes power generation systems, high-horsepower engines, and aftermarket support. The segment’s structure has been adjusted to accommodate the suspension of operations in Russia, thereby focusing on other geographic regions.
Power Systems Segment
Focused on power generation technology, the Power Systems segment encompasses an array of products that include:
- Power Generation Solutions: Standby and prime power generators that cater to various market segments, including commercial and industrial applications.
- Industrial Engines: High-speed engines optimized for use across multiple sectors such as mining and defense.
- Generator Technologies: A range of alternators and generating solutions supporting various market demands.
Accelera Segment
The Accelera segment is dedicated to the development of hydrogen production technologies and electrified power systems. Primarily engaged in the emerging markets of green hydrogen and electric powertrains, Accelera's focus includes the cultivation of partnerships within the hydrogen and electric vehicle sectors.
D. Joint Ventures, Alliances, and Non-Wholly-Owned Subsidiaries
Cummins maintains numerous joint ventures and alliances globally, primarily in manufacturing and distribution. Control over these joint ventures allows for increased market penetration and operational efficiencies. Notable entities include:
- Dongfeng Cummins Engine Company, Ltd.
- Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., Ltd.
- Tata Cummins, Ltd.
In addition to these ventures, the newly established joint venture with Daimler and PACCAR aims to enhance battery cell production capabilities for electric vehicles in the U.S.
E. Research and Development

The firm dedicated approximately $1.4 billion in R&D in 2023, aimed primarily at advancements that comply with global emission standards and contribute to the development of cleaner technologies. The company continuously seeks to innovate and improve current product offerings to align with evolving market requirements.
F. Environmental Sustainability
Cummins’ environmental strategy, known as PLANET 2050, is aligned with industry standards and sustainability goals.
