Verizon Communications Inc. Expands Educational Initiative, Reaches 8.5 Million Students

Launched 12 years ago, Verizon Innovative Learning is a critical component of Verizon’s efforts to address barriers to digital inclusion. According to a recent survey, only 55% of students entering the workforce feel they have the skills necessary to succeed in today’s digital economy. This underscores the importance of Verizon’s mission to equip students and teachers with the technology and skills needed to thrive.

Donna Epps, Verizon’s Chief Responsible Business Officer, emphasized the initiative's long-term commitment, stating, “For more than a decade, Verizon Innovative Learning has committed to breaking down barriers and equipping students with the skills and technology they need to thrive in today’s digital economy.” The expansion of this initiative is seen as a vital step towards empowering the next generation of learners.

In a notable development, Verizon Innovative Learning Schools will welcome 34 new Title I schools from nine districts for the 2025-2026 school year. This expansion includes partnerships with well-known districts such as Chicago Public Schools, Compton Unified School District, and Kansas City Public Schools, among others.

Participating schools will receive essential resources, including tablets, laptops, and a Verizon data plan for each student and teacher. Furthermore, Verizon will subsidize a full-time technology coach for each school, ensuring that educators can effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices.

The program has already demonstrated positive outcomes; 80% of teachers involved reported increased confidence in using technology in their teaching, while the same percentage noted enhanced student engagement.

In addition to supporting specific schools, Verizon Innovative Learning offers a freely accessible online portal known as Verizon Innovative Learning HQ. This platform provides over 500 STEM-infused K-12 lessons and professional development resources, allowing educators nationwide to adopt innovative teaching methods. With lessons aligned to educational standards, the portal includes resources for immersive learning experiences using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), as well as gaming content and a free Esports league for middle and high schools.

The resources available on the platform are the result of collaborations with educational leaders such as Discovery Education and Arizona State University’s J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute.

By addressing the digital divide, these initiatives not only aim to enhance educational outcomes but also empower individuals to improve their lives through technology.
