A. Company Overview
The Sherwin-Williams Company is a prominent American manufacturer and marketer of paints, coatings, and related products. Founded in 1866, the company was incorporated in Ohio in 1884 and has since established itself as a key player in the coatings industry. Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Sherwin-Williams serves a diverse customer base that includes professional contractors, industrial clients, commercial entities, and retail consumers, primarily across North and South America, along with locations in the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Business Segments
Sherwin-Williams organizes its operations into three major reportable segments: Paint Stores Group, Consumer Brands Group, and Performance Coatings Group, with additional business activities managed in an Administrative segment.
Paint Stores Group
The Paint Stores Group operates a substantial network of 4,694 company-owned specialty paint stores primarily located in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. These stores cater to a wide array of customers, including architectural and industrial paint contractors, as well as do-it-yourself homeowners. The product offerings within this segment include Sherwin-Williams® branded paints, coatings, protective and marine products, and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) finishes. Importantly, the majority of these offerings are produced in manufacturing facilities under the Consumer Brands Group umbrella, complemented by a selective range of purchased associated products.
Consumer Brands Group
The Consumer Brands Group manufactures and distributes an extensive collection of branded and private-label architectural coatings, which includes paints, stains, varnishes, and wood finishing products. It distributes these products to retailers, home centers, and hardware stores across North America, Latin America, and Europe. Notably, this segment divested a non-core aerosol business domestically and its architectural business in China during 2023. This group also operates 318 specialty paint stores in Latin America that cater to various customer segments. A significant portion of this segment's sales is interdepartmental, supplying products primarily to the Paint Stores Group.
Performance Coatings Group
This segment focuses on developing and selling industrial coatings for applications in sectors such as automotive refinishing, protective and marine coatings, as well as packaging coatings. The Performance Coatings Group boasts a worldwide presence and extends its reach through technology licensing and trade name agreements. In 2023, the group expanded its portfolio through the acquisition of SIC Holding GmbH, a German-based entity. The group distributes its products through its own branches, direct sales, and various third-party distributors.
Administrative Segment
The Administrative segment encompasses the corporate headquarters’ expenses, interest income and expense, and costs related to closed facilities. It is primarily focused on non-operational activities and accounts for the external leasing revenue from properties held by the company.
Supply Chain and Raw Materials
The success of Sherwin-Williams hinges on its supply chain management and procurement strategies for raw materials necessary for paint and coatings production. The principal raw materials include resins, pigments, latex, solvents, and packaging components, which are predominantly sourced from global suppliers and typically depend on upstream petrochemical feedstocks. The company implements various strategies such as inventory management and developing strategic supplier relationships to mitigate risks related to its raw materials sourcing.
Seasonality and Financial Practices
Sales for Sherwin-Williams typically peak in the second and third quarters, associating peaks of demand for coatings products with favorable weather conditions conducive to painting activities. The company builds its inventories during the first quarter to prepare for this seasonal demand, utilizing short-term borrowings to finance its working capital requirements.
Trademarks and Intellectual Property
Sherwin-Williams places significant value on its trademarks, which are essential to its brand recognition and customer loyalty. This includes a broad range of unique product names under each of its reportable segments. While patents do exist, they are not critical to the overall operations of the company, though some income is derived from licensing technology within the Performance Coatings Group.
Competitive Landscape
The coatings industry is characterized by intense competition from various local, regional, national, and international companies. In the Paint Stores Group segment, competitive advantages stem from product quality, innovation, technical expertise, and customer service. The same competitive factors apply to the Consumer Brands Group and the Performance Coatings Group, with focus on technological advancements and effective distribution chains being paramount.
Workforce
As of December 31, 2023, Sherwin-Williams employed approximately 64,088 individuals globally. The substantial workforce primarily operates within the United States, with a notable international presence. The company values a skilled and diverse workforce as a critical component of its operational effectiveness and aims to develop talent through various internal programs and strategies.
