Sherritt International Corporation Reports Q1 2025 Results: Strategic Transactions and Ongoing Expansion Efforts
Sherritt International Corporation (TSX: S), a leader in the extraction of nickel and cobalt through hydrometallurgical processes, has released its financial results for the first quarter of 2025. The company’s performance reflects a mix of strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening its capital structure and ongoing challenges in the operational landscape of Cuba.
1. Key Financial Highlights
In the three months ending March 31, 2025, Sherritt reported a net loss from continuing operations of $40.6 million, or $(0.10) per share, compared to a net loss of $40.9 million in the same quarter of the previous year. Notably, the adjusted net loss from continuing operations was $22.8 million, or $(0.06) per share, reflecting a slight improvement from the prior year’s adjusted loss of $24.6 million.
The corporation's revenue for Q1 2025 amounted to $38.4 million, marking a 33% increase from $28.8 million in Q1 2024. This growth was driven mainly by higher sales volumes and prices in the metals segment. Sherritt's finished nickel production at the Moa Joint Venture (Moa JV) was 2,947 tonnes, while finished cobalt production totaled 323 tonnes, although both figures represented declines from the previous year.
Adjusted EBITDA
The Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was $4.4 million, a significant improvement compared to a loss of $6.5 million in Q1 2024. This increase is attributed to enhanced operational efficiency and strategic cost management.
2. Strategic Transactions to Fortify Capital Structure
During the quarter, Sherritt announced a significant transaction aimed at strengthening its balance sheet. The company executed a plan of arrangement under the Canada Business Corporations Act, which involved the exchange of its existing notes for amended senior secured notes due in November 2031. This strategic move is expected to reduce annual interest expenses by approximately $3 million and extend the maturity of debt obligations, providing the company with more financial flexibility.
In total, Sherritt extinguished $291.6 million in outstanding notes, which included its second lien secured notes and PIK notes. These successful transactions are anticipated to improve the corporation's long-term capital structure and enhance liquidity.
3. Ongoing Expansion at Moa Joint Venture
Sherritt has commenced phase two of the Moa JV expansion project, which is expected to ramp up production later this year. The expansion aims to increase annual production of mixed sulphide precipitate, thereby maximizing profitability from the joint venture's mine feed. This strategic initiative is crucial for meeting the growing demand for nickel and cobalt, particularly in the electric vehicle supply chain.
Leon Binedell, President and CEO of Sherritt, expressed optimism about the company’s future, stating, "Completion of these milestones enables us to deliver near-term growth and substantial long-term value creation." He also emphasized the commitment to navigate challenges posed by U.S. sanctions affecting Cuba's foreign currency availability, which have impacted operational efficiency.
4. Financial Performance and Operational Challenges
The first quarter saw Sherritt's nickel sales reach 3,439 tonnes, while cobalt sales totaled 456 tonnes. The net direct cash cost of nickel was reported at $5.95 per pound, benefiting from higher by-product credits and lower processing costs. However, the operating environment in Cuba remains challenging, as ongoing U.S. sanctions have constrained foreign currency access and impacted the provision of goods and services.
The electricity production from Sherritt's Varadero facility was recorded at 170 GWh, with expectations that the operational mode will remain stable throughout 2025. Despite these challenges, Sherritt remains confident in its liquidity management strategies and the sustainability of its Moa JV through cyclical lows in nickel and cobalt prices.
5. Looking Ahead
As Sherritt continues to execute its strategic initiatives and manage operational challenges, the corporation anticipates stronger performance in the latter half of 2025. The board's appointment of Richard Moat to its ranks is expected to bring additional expertise as the company focuses on expanding its critical mineral production capabilities and enhancing shareholder value.
Sherritt will host a conference call on May 14, 2025, to discuss its results in detail, providing further insights into its operational strategies and outlook for the year ahead.
