Micron Completes Acquisition of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 Site in Taiwan
Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MU) has made a significant move in its growth strategy by finalizing the acquisition of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (PSMC) P5 site located in Tongluo, Miaoli County, Taiwan. This acquisition, originally announced on January 17, 2026, will enhance Micron’s manufacturing capabilities and solidify its position in the competitive semiconductor industry.
1. Expansion of Operations in Taiwan
The Tongluo site spans approximately 300,000 square feet of existing 300mm cleanroom space, augmenting Micron's existing operations at its vertically integrated mega campus in Taichung, situated about 15 miles away. This strategic acquisition is designed to bolster Micron’s production of leading-edge DRAM products, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), to address the escalating demand driven by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI).
As part of the acquisition process, Micron has already begun preparations for the new facility. With the transaction now complete, the company plans to retrofit the existing cleanroom to expedite its operational readiness. Product shipments from the Tongluo site are anticipated to begin in fiscal 2028, reflecting Micron's commitment to meeting the growing needs of the market.
2. Future Growth and Development Plans
Beyond the initial retrofitting, Micron has ambitious plans for the Tongluo site. The company intends to initiate the construction of a second facility, comparable in size—approximately 270,000 square feet of cleanroom space—by the end of fiscal 2026. This expansion is a testament to Micron’s proactive approach in scaling its production capacity to meet future demand.
Manish Bhatia, Micron’s executive vice president of global operations, emphasized the strategic importance of the Tongluo facility in the company's global expansion plans. He stated, “Memory is a strategic asset that dictates AI product performance, and the acquisition and phased ramp of this site strengthens our ability to capitalize on these significant opportunities.” Bhatia also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including the Taiwan government and construction partners, which facilitated the swift acquisition and ramp-up process.
3. Collaborative Support from the Taiwanese Government
Micron expressed gratitude for the strong support received from PSMC and various government entities in Taiwan, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs, National Science and Technology Council, and Hsinchu Science Park, as well as the Miaoli County Government. This collaboration has been pivotal in ensuring a smooth transition and setup of the new facility, leveraging Taiwan’s renowned semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
4. Looking Ahead
As Micron Technology continues to evolve and expand its operations, the acquisition of the PSMC Tongluo site represents a critical step in enhancing its production capabilities and addressing the burgeoning demand for memory products in AI applications. With the anticipated growth of the semiconductor market, particularly in DRAM and HBM, Micron is positioning itself to be a leader in this dynamic sector.
As the company moves forward, investors and industry analysts will be closely monitoring Micron's execution of its expansion plans and the impact it will have on its market position and financial performance in the coming years.
