1. Introduction to Innovative Solutions

On February 20, 2025, Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) announced a significant expansion of its maXTouch® M1 Generation family with the launch of the ATMXT3072M1 and ATMXT2496M1 touchscreen controller families. This release is aimed at automakers looking to revolutionize the driving experience through advanced smart cockpit designs featuring large displays. As automotive technology continues to evolve, these new touchscreen controllers are designed to meet the challenges posed by large, curved, and free-form touch displays, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.

2. Enhancing Touch Functionality in Automotive Displays

The automotive industry is witnessing a shift towards innovative display technologies, including Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and microLEDs. However, the integration of capacitive touch sensing in these advanced displays presents challenges such as thinner stack-ups and an increased number of touch electrodes, which can lead to higher capacitive loads and display noise interference.

Microchip's ATMXT3072M1 and ATMXT2496M1 touchscreen controllers are engineered to address these challenges with a robust design that supports up to 112 reconfigurable touch channels and 162 equivalent touch channels in ultra-wide mode. This capability allows for the support of large touch displays, measuring up to 20 inches in a 16:9 format and 34 inches in a 7:1 format.

3. Advanced Touch Signal Processing

To combat issues like false or missed touch detections, Microchip employs its proprietary Smart Mutual touch acquisition method and algorithms, which enhance the touch Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) by up to +15 dB compared to previous generations. Patrick Johnson, Senior Corporate Vice President overseeing Microchip's human machine interface division, highlighted the importance of integrating reliable touch functionality within these systems, stating, “Our ATMXT3072M1 and ATMXT2496M1 touchscreen controllers address these challenges with innovative sensing algorithms for fast and reliable touch performance.”

4. Compliance and Safety Features

In line with the high safety standards required in the automotive sector, both controllers are compliant with ASIL-A and B standards and have been developed according to Microchip's ISO26262 Functional Safety Management System, certified by TÜV Rheinland. The availability of Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) and safety manuals will assist clients in achieving certification for their systems' touch functionality more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Cybersecurity and Over-the-Air Updates

A notable feature of the new touchscreen controllers is their upgradable firmware, which can be managed by the automobile's main computer system. The integrated firmware authentication feature implements the SHA-512 cryptographic hash function, ensuring secure Over-the-Air (OTA) updates that comply with ISO 21434:2021 standards.

5. Innovations for Driver Safety

Recognizing the growing emphasis on driver safety, Microchip’s solutions include the Knob-on-Display™ (KoD™) technology, which allows for the addition of intuitive physical knobs on touchscreen interfaces. This design not only enhances safety by limiting eyes-off-road time but also maintains the sleek appearance of modern vehicle displays. Additionally, the incorporation of haptic feedback technology in the new controllers aims to reduce driver distraction by providing tactile responses.

6. Development Tools and Availability

To support the adoption of these new touchscreen controllers, Microchip has introduced the EV01S50A development printed circuit board (PCB) specifically designed for the ATMXT3072M1 family. Furthermore, the EV13B92A evaluation kit, featuring a 15.6” ITO touch sensor, is available for customer testing and evaluation.

For further information on purchasing options, interested parties are encouraged to contact a Microchip sales representative or authorized distributor.

7. Conclusion

Microchip Technology Inc.'s latest touchscreen controllers signify a substantial advancement in automotive display technology, addressing the complexities of modern vehicle interfaces. By combining innovative touch sensing capabilities with rigorous safety compliance and user-friendly features, Microchip continues to position itself as a leader in the automotive technology sector, catering to the evolving needs of automakers and enhancing the driving experience.
