1. Introduction

In a significant stride towards bolstering American energy independence and manufacturing capabilities, First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) has inaugurated its new $1.1 billion manufacturing facility in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. This state-of-the-art facility, which spans approximately 2.4 million square feet—an area nearly 11 times the size of the New Orleans Superdome—marks a major investment in U.S. solar technology and is poised to enhance First Solar's production capacity significantly.

2. Facility Overview and Job Creation

The Iberia Parish facility began production in July 2025, ahead of schedule, thanks to favorable legislative and trade conditions, notably the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and supportive policies from the Trump administration. Currently, the facility employs over 700 individuals, with projections to increase employment to 826 by the end of the year. The facility is expected to contribute 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of annual nameplate capacity to First Solar’s operations, elevating the company's American manufacturing footprint to 14 GW in 2026 and 17.7 GW in 2027.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry emphasized the positive impact of First Solar's investment on the local economy, stating, “This is exactly how we advance President Trump’s agenda of American energy dominance.” He noted that the facility is already generating hundreds of good-paying jobs and new opportunities for local workers and businesses.

3. Economic Impact

An economic impact analysis conducted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and commissioned by the Iberia Economic Development Authority (IEDA) forecasts that the new facility will boost Iberia Parish's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 4.4% in its first full year of operations at capacity. Manufacturing roles at the facility offer an attractive average compensation package of $90,000 per year, significantly surpassing the per capita income in the region, which is more than three times lower.

4. Commitment to American Manufacturing

Mark Widmar, CEO of First Solar, articulated the company’s commitment to American energy dominance through this investment. “This is more than just a manufacturing facility. It’s a commitment to American energy dominance, affordable electricity, growth and prosperity,” he stated. By utilizing American materials—such as glass from Illinois and Ohio, steel produced in Mississippi, and components fabricated in Louisiana—the facility reinforces First Solar’s strategy of domestic production, free from reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those linked to Chinese crystalline silicon.

5. Advanced Manufacturing Technology

The facility is equipped with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology that enhances manufacturing efficiency. AI tools utilize computer vision and deep learning to automatically detect defects in solar panels during production. This advanced technology allows technicians and operators to make informed adjustments, optimizing the manufacturing process.

Kuntal Kumar Verma, Chief Manufacturing Officer at First Solar, hailed the facility as one of the most advanced solar manufacturing plants globally, stating, “This factory demonstrates how AI can be harnessed to help American factory workers reach their full potential.” He emphasized that the integration of AI is essential for achieving productivity gains, enabling First Solar to out-innovate its competitors.

6. Expanding Manufacturing Footprint

The Louisiana facility is part of a broader strategy to create the largest solar technology manufacturing and research and development footprint in the Western Hemisphere. Together with existing facilities in Ohio and Alabama, First Solar is making significant strides in the renewable energy sector. The company recently announced an additional investment in Gaffney, South Carolina, to onshore final production processes for its Series 6 modules, further strengthening its domestic manufacturing capabilities.

By the end of 2026, First Solar anticipates employing over 5,500 individuals across the U.S., contributing to an estimated 30,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs nationwide, alongside generating over $3 billion in labor income.

7. Conclusion

First Solar's investment in the new Louisiana manufacturing facility represents a pivotal moment for U.S. solar manufacturing and energy independence. The facility not only promises to enhance production capacity and job creation but also embodies the company's commitment to sustainable and innovative American manufacturing. As the demand for clean energy solutions continues to rise, First Solar is positioned as a leader in the transition towards a more sustainable and self-sufficient energy future.
