Truespeed and Freedom Fibre Merge to Create a Powerhouse in UK Telecoms
1. Strategic Combination Announced
In a significant development for the UK telecommunications sector, Truespeed Communications and Freedom Fibre have announced a strategic merger, combining their operations to create a robust, capital-efficient full fibre platform. This merger not only marks a pivotal moment for the two companies but also plays a crucial role in the ongoing consolidation of the burgeoning UK alternative network (altnet) sector.
2. A Complementary Union
The merger brings together two complementary and effectively unlevered businesses, resulting in a combined footprint of 412,000 premises ready for service and a customer base of 70,000. The merged entity will primarily operate across the North-West, West Midlands, South-West, and East of England, regions that are critical to the UK's digital infrastructure growth.
Truespeed, which has a proven track record following its merger with County Broadband in 2025, has successfully consolidated its networks in the South-West and East of England. Freedom Fibre, on the other hand, has expanded its reach and capabilities through its previous merger with VX UK in 2024, enhancing its network infrastructure and forming an integrated wholesale and multi-brand retail operation.
3. Accelerating Growth and Profitability
The newly formed group is anticipated to scale efficiently, leveraging the strengths of both companies to accelerate its path toward profitability. Truespeed, founded in 2014 and backed by Aviva Investors, is known for its high penetration rates and exceptional customer satisfaction in the full fibre broadband market. Freedom Fibre, supported by InfraBridge and Equitix, started as a wholesale-only platform focused on delivering open-access fibre infrastructure.
This strategic combination is set to create a scalable business model, merging Truespeed's retail expertise with Freedom Fibre's wholesale capabilities to unlock operational synergies and commercial benefits.
4. Leadership and Vision
Nathan Vautier, who is proposed to be the CEO of the new combined entity, expressed optimism about the merger's potential. He stated, “This merger is a strategic step that demonstrates our commitment to ongoing industry consolidation and growth. As we combine expertise and scale, our new platform is primed to lead future M&A and drive broader transformation.”
Nelson Missier, slated to be the Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the merger positions the companies to drive commercial growth and deliver exceptional service to customers.
5. Support from Long-Term Investors
The merger has garnered support from long-term investors including Aviva Investors, InfraBridge, and Equitix. Ian Shervell, Senior Director at Aviva Investors, highlighted the importance of the merger in bringing together critical capabilities necessary for future success in the maturing UK telecoms market. James Burke, Managing Director & Co-Head at InfraBridge, added that the combination creates a stronger platform with greater operational depth and broader geographic reach.
6. Regulatory Approval and Future Outlook
The merger is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026. As the UK continues to evolve its telecommunications landscape, the newly formed entity is well-positioned to capitalize on market trends and enhance performance prospects.
7. Advisers
Truespeed was advised by Acuity Advisors, with legal counsel from CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP. Freedom Fibre received financial advisory services from Houlihan Lokey, accompanied by legal advice from Weil, Gotshal & Manges.
As the telecommunications sector undergoes rapid transformation, the merger of Truespeed and Freedom Fibre represents a strategic move toward building a more resilient and competitive full fibre platform in the UK, ensuring enhanced connectivity and service quality for customers across the region.
