In a significant move aimed at reinforcing its position as a leader in the airline industry, Delta Air Lines Inc. has announced a series of leadership changes. This announcement comes as the company prepares for a new era following the impending retirement of long-serving executive John Laughter. CEO Ed Bastian communicated these changes in a memo to employees on March 5, 2026, outlining a vision for Delta’s future that emphasizes teamwork, shared values, and a commitment to customer and employee satisfaction.

1. Acknowledging a Distinguished Career

John Laughter, Delta’s Executive Vice President, Chief of Operations, and President of Delta TechOps, will retire effective April 30, 2026, after a remarkable 30-year career with the airline. Bastian expressed deep gratitude for Laughter’s contributions, highlighting his journey from an aircraft liaison engineer to a pivotal leadership role during some of the airline's most challenging times. “John has always been known as a servant leader and advocate for Delta's people-focused culture,” Bastian stated, underscoring the impact Laughter has had on both employees and customers.

2. New Leadership Appointments

Peter Carter Promoted to President

Peter Carter, who has been with Delta for a decade, is being promoted to President. In this expanded role, he will oversee enterprise strategy, global policy and legal matters, Delta's international portfolio, as well as teams focused on sustainability and diversity. Bastian praised Carter's strategic insight and long-term vision, noting his significant contributions to various facets of Delta’s business.

Dan Janki as Chief Operating Officer

Stepping into the role of Chief Operating Officer, Dan Janki will now manage Delta's operational integrity, including Airport Customer Service, Flight Operations, In-Flight Service, and Corporate Safety, Security, and Compliance teams. Previously serving as Delta's Chief Financial Officer, Janki's operational depth and disciplined focus are expected to enhance the airline's performance in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.

Erik Snell Takes the Helm as CFO

Erik Snell, who has been with Delta for 20 years and most recently held the position of Chief Customer Experience Officer, will become the new Chief Financial Officer. Snell’s extensive background in finance and operations will enable him to lead Delta’s Finance organization, Fleet and Supply Chain teams, and the refinery subsidiary Monroe Energy. Bastian noted Snell's analytical skills and understanding of frontline operations as key assets for the Finance team.

Ranjan Goswami Elevated to Chief Marketing and Product Officer

Following Alicia Tillman's decision to pursue broader leadership opportunities outside of Delta, Ranjan Goswami will step into the role of Chief Marketing and Product Officer. Bastian emphasized Goswami’s successful track record in enhancing Delta's brand and improving customer travel experiences, positioning him well for this elevated responsibility.

3. A Commitment to Future Success

The leadership changes at Delta Air Lines are not merely administrative; they reflect a strategic alignment with the company’s vision for future growth. The new leadership team, consisting of Carter, Janki, Snell, and Goswami, will report directly to CEO Ed Bastian, ensuring cohesive direction as they navigate the complexities of the airline industry.

Bastian concluded the memo by reiterating the importance of teamwork and shared values in shaping Delta's journey forward. As the airline industry continues to evolve, these leadership changes position Delta to not only meet the challenges ahead but also to thrive as the brand of choice for customers and employees alike.

The airline industry is watching closely to see how these changes will unfold and what impact they will have on Delta's operational efficiency and customer engagement strategies in the coming years.
