CME Group and CF Benchmarks Set to Expand Cryptocurrency Offerings
1. New Launches for Growing Market
On May 29, 2025, CME Group Inc., the world's leading derivatives marketplace, announced a significant expansion in its cryptocurrency offerings. Partnering with CF Benchmarks, a recognized provider of cryptocurrency benchmark indices, CME Group plans to launch four new cryptocurrency reference rates and real-time indices for Arbitrum, Ondo, NEAR, and Sui. This launch is scheduled for June 2, 2025, marking a strategic move to cater to the evolving needs of institutional investors in the burgeoning digital asset space.
2. Enhancing Market Transparency
The newly introduced reference rates and indices are designed to provide market participants with transparent and reliable pricing data. Giovanni Vicioso, CME Group's Global Head of Cryptocurrency Products, emphasized the importance of these benchmarks for accurately valuing portfolios and creating structured products. “With 28 cryptocurrencies in our suite of CME CF Reference Rates and Real-Time Indices, we will provide pricing benchmarks across more than 96% of the investible cryptocurrency market capitalization,” he stated. This move further solidifies CME Group's commitment to bringing trusted data to the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
3. Robust Methodologies and Trusted Data
The new benchmarks will utilize pricing data from a selection of established exchanges, including Bitstamp, Bullish, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Gemini, itBit, Kraken, and LMAX Digital. This multi-exchange approach ensures that the reference rates are grounded in comprehensive market data, enhancing their reliability.
Sui Chung, CEO of CF Benchmarks, highlighted the necessity for trustworthy benchmarks as the range of investible crypto assets expands. “Institutions need benchmarks they can trust—benchmarks that meet the same standards of accuracy, transparency, and governance they expect in traditional finance,” he remarked. The addition of Arbitrum, Ondo, NEAR, and Sui to the CME CF Single Asset Series underscores the ongoing institutionalization of digital assets, facilitating engagement with these emerging tokens through indices built on robust methodologies.
4. Publication Schedule and Data Access
Each of the new reference rates will provide the U.S. dollar price of the respective digital assets, published once a day at 4 p.m. London time. In addition, the real-time indices will be available every second, 24/7, allowing for continuous access to pricing data. Notably, reference rates for Ondo and Sui will also be published daily at 4 p.m. New York time, providing additional accessibility for U.S.-based market participants.
5. A Continued Commitment to Innovation
CME Group's foray into these new cryptocurrency offerings is a testament to its commitment to innovation and adaptability in a rapidly changing financial landscape. With the digital asset market continuing to grow, the introduction of these indices is positioned to enhance the trading and investment experience for institutional clients, further bridging the gap between traditional finance and the cryptocurrency markets.
