Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE), a leader in the clean fuel transportation sector, has announced a significant contract to design, build, and maintain a second hydrogen fueling station for Foothill Transit. This partnership marks a continuation of their over 20-year collaboration, which aims to bolster the agency's commitment to low-emissions public transport.

1. Strategic Partnership and Sustainability Goals

In a press release, Clean Energy expressed enthusiasm about enhancing Foothill Transit’s hydrogen infrastructure. "Foothill continues to set the standard for sustainability in transit, and we’re excited to help expand their hydrogen infrastructure as they move proactively toward a zero-emissions future,” stated Chad Lindholm, senior vice president at Clean Energy.

The new station will be strategically located at Foothill Transit’s Arcadia bus yard, which also serves as a fueling depot for the agency’s renewable natural gas (RNG) bus fleet. The project comes with an initial order of 19 new hydrogen fuel cell buses that will be operating from this site, underscoring the agency's commitment to expanding its fleet of low-emissions vehicles.

2. Financial Details and Funding Support

The estimated cost for this design-build project is $11.3 million, with funding being partially sourced through federal and state grant assistance. This financial backing illustrates the growing support for sustainable transportation initiatives from governmental bodies, aligning with broader environmental goals.

Foothill Transit, which serves over 11 million customers annually across the San Gabriel Valley, Pomona Valley, and downtown Los Angeles, is already ahead of the curve with its operational fleet. Currently, 33 zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell buses are in service at its Pomona station, the first hydrogen station constructed by Clean Energy, which has been operational since June 2023.

3. Future Plans and Construction Timeline

The new hydrogen station in Arcadia, designed to store liquid hydrogen and dispense it in gaseous form, is currently in the design stage. Construction is expected to commence in mid-2026, setting the stage for further advancements in hydrogen fueling capabilities for public transit.

4. Clean Energy's Role in Sustainable Transport

Clean Energy Fuels Corp. remains dedicated to its mission of decarbonizing transportation. By providing renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen solutions, the company enables a wide array of vehicles—including city buses, airport shuttles, and heavy-duty trucks—to significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. With a vast network of fueling stations across the U.S. and Canada, Clean Energy is positioned as a pivotal player in the transition toward cleaner fuels.

5. Foothill Transit’s Commitment to Innovation

Foothill Transit is recognized for its leadership in sustainable transportation, boasting California's largest fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses. The agency's commitment to safety, quality, and efficiency aligns with California's ambitious climate goals, as they continue to innovate in the public transit sector.

As both Clean Energy and Foothill Transit advance their partnership, the focus on creating a robust infrastructure for hydrogen fuel not only supports environmental sustainability but also enhances the operational efficiency of public transportation systems in densely populated areas.

In closing, this collaboration exemplifies the potential of public-private partnerships in tackling climate change and promoting low-emission solutions within the transportation industry. The ongoing developments in hydrogen infrastructure signal a promising future for clean energy in public transit.
