A. Company Overview
Century Aluminum Company is a leading global producer of primary aluminum, engaging in the production and sale of aluminum from its smelting facilities located in the United States and Iceland. As an integral part of the global aluminum supply chain, the company specializes in creating standard-grade and value-added primary aluminum products, positioning itself strategically in an international market where aluminum is traded primarily on the London Metal Exchange (LME) alongside various regional premiums.
With an annual production capacity of approximately 1,016,000 tonnes per year (tpy), Century Aluminum currently finds about 307,000 tpy of its capacity curtailed as of the end of 2023. The company reported production figures of approximately 690,000 tonnes of primary aluminum during the same period.
In addition to its core aluminum production, Century Aluminum has a substantial joint venture interest in the Jamalco bauxite mining operation and alumina refinery in Jamaica, which fortifies its supply chain for alumina, a critical input in the aluminum manufacturing process. Furthermore, it operates a carbon anode production facility in the Netherlands, essential for its smelting processes.
B. Facilities and Operations
Primary Aluminum Facilities
Century Aluminum operates five primary aluminum smelting facilities, three of which are located in the United States: Hawesville, Sebree, and Mt. Holly, and one in Grundartangi, Iceland. Each facility has its own capacity for aluminum production:
- Grundartangi: This facility, situated in Iceland, is the company’s most advanced smelter, currently operating with a production capacity of around 317,000 tonnes. Upon completion of a multi-year expansion project, this capacity is anticipated to increase to approximately 325,000 tonnes. Grundartangi specializes in both standard-grade aluminum ingots and value-added products such as primary foundry alloys.
- Hawesville: Located in Kentucky, this facility holds an annual production capacity of about 250,000 tonnes but has been fully curtailed since August 2022, pending a return to operation contingent on market conditions.
- Sebree: Adjacent to the Green River in Kentucky, Sebree has a capacity of approximately 220,000 tonnes and primarily produces standard-grade aluminum.
- Mt. Holly: In Goose Creek, South Carolina, Mt. Holly operates with a capacity of about 229,000 tonnes. This facility had undergone repairs and restoration to reinstate part of its capacity.
Carbon Anode Production Facility
The carbon anode production facility located in Vlissingen, Netherlands, complements the company’s production chain. This facility has an annual capacity of around 163,000 tonnes and is designed to supply carbon anodes critical for the aluminum smelting process. The facility has undergone several expansions since Century's acquisition, significantly boosting its capacity.
Bauxite Mining and Alumina Refining
The acquisition of a 55% interest in Jamalco marks a significant expansion of Century Aluminum's vertical integration strategy. Jamalco has a refining capacity of approximately 1.4 million tonnes, enabling Century to secure a consistent supply of alumina, thereby reducing dependency on external suppliers. In 2023, Century sourced approximately 29% of Jamalco's alumina production for its operations in Grundartangi.
C. Strategic Focus
Century Aluminum seeks to remain competitive through a focus on innovation and sustainable production methods, investing in technology to minimize costs and expand product offerings. A notable initiative is the Natur-Al™ product line, which produces low-carbon aluminum aimed at environmentally conscious markets.
Consistent internal growth strategies include facility expansions and the introduction of value-added products. The company’s management continues to explore opportunities to enhance production efficiency and reduce operational costs, notably through projects like the Casthouse Project at Grundartangi, which aims to produce additional value-added aluminum products.
D. Customer Base and Sales
The customer landscape for Century Aluminum is heavily concentrated, with Glencore plc and its affiliates accounting for approximately 73.8% of consolidated net sales in 2023. This critical relationship reflects the company’s strategy to partner with large industrial consumers of aluminum while offering additional products, such as alumina, further solidifying these agreements.
E. Competitive Advantages
Century Aluminum claims several competitive advantages in its operations:
- Focused Production: Concentrating on primary aluminum production allows the company to optimize resources and improve operational efficiencies.
- Internal Growth Opportunities: The ongoing expansions across its facilities enhance its production capacity and product offerings.
- Sustainability Initiatives: The emphasis on low-carbon aluminum production, such as Natur-Al™, aligns with global sustainability trends and can help mitigate regulatory risks associated with carbon emissions.
- Market Access: The company benefits from duty-free access to key markets in the U.S. and EEA due to regional trade agreements, thus positioning itself favorably against international competitors.
- Diverse Product Portfolio: The capability to produce various aluminum shapes and alloys, combined with ongoing investment in value-added product lines, creates multiple revenue streams.
- Proximity to Customers: Its smelting facilities are strategically located near key consumer markets, ensuring shorter supply chains and lower transportation costs.
F. Pricing and Cost Structure
Pricing of Century’s products is influenced by several factors, including the LME price for primary aluminum, regional premium pricing, and the additional value-added product premiums. Key production expenses encompass the costs of alumina, electrical power, carbon products, and labor, which collectively represent a significant portion of the company's overall production costs.
Power supply agreements, particularly long-term contracts tied to competitive market pricing, play a crucial role in managing operational costs. The company structures its energy purchases to mitigate volatility in power costs across its facilities.
G. Regulatory Considerations
Century Aluminum's operations are governed by various environmental regulations across multiple jurisdictions, which require rigorous compliance and can necessitate capital expenditures. The company actively monitors changes in regulatory requirements related to greenhouse gas emissions and related environmental impacts, positioning itself to adapt proactively.
