A. Company Overview

AST SpaceMobile Inc. is pioneering the development of a global Cellular Broadband network in space that aims to be directly accessible from everyday smartphones, including devices operating on 2G, 4G-LTE, and 5G technologies. This groundbreaking initiative targets both commercial and government applications, leveraging a robust portfolio of intellectual property (IP) and patents designed to deliver high-speed Cellular Broadband services to users who find themselves outside the coverage of terrestrial networks. The operational backbone of the SpaceMobile Service will comprise a constellation of high-powered, large phased-array satellites located in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), utilising low band and middle band spectrum that is licensed to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

The strategic goal of AST SpaceMobile is to partner with MNOs, thereby allowing them to offer the SpaceMobile Service as an extension of their existing services, rather than as a standalone offering. Upon losing terrestrial coverage, mobile users would be automatically notified on their devices, enabling them to subscribe to coverage through their current service providers without requiring additional devices or equipment. The anticipated business model will revolve around revenue-sharing agreements with MNOs, presenting mutual benefits that extend their service offerings without necessitating significant infrastructure investment.

B. Technology and Innovation

On April 1, 2019, AST SpaceMobile launched its inaugural test satellite, BlueWalker 1 (BW1), aimed at validating its satellite-to-cellular communication technology. The BW1 successfully utilized the 4G-LTE protocol in space, demonstrating effective communication despite the challenges, like Doppler effects and latency associated with satellite communication. The subsequent launch of BlueWalker 3 (BW3) on September 10, 2022, marked significant advancements, culminating in successful two-way voice calls and achieving data speeds exceeding 10 Mbps, establishing an essential technical foundation for commercial services.

The Block 1 BB satellites are currently being assembled and tested, maintaining a similar size and weight to the BW3 satellite but promising tenfold throughput improvements. Looking ahead, the Block 2 BB satellites, each measuring approximately 2,400 square feet, are being designed to even greater specifications, including the largest phased array ever deployed in LEO. The innovation embedded in these satellites includes the AST 5000 Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chip that aims to increase throughput capacity and efficiency, allowing for peak data rates of up to 120 Mbps.

C. Competitive Advantage

AST SpaceMobile’s operational strategy hinges on several distinct competitive advantages:

  1. Large Addressable Market: The SpaceMobile Service targets mobile users who frequently transition in and out of cellular coverage, including 5.6 billion subscribers identified by the GSMA. A vast portion of the population remains without cellular broadband access, creating a significant opportunity for AST SpaceMobile to fill this gap.
  2. Cost-Effective Solutions for MNOs: The service allows MNOs to improve coverage and customer satisfaction without incurring high capital costs associated with building terrestrial infrastructure. This model positions MNOs to boost their average revenue per user (ARPU) by extending services to previously underserved areas.
  3. Direct Service to Unmodified Devices: The innovative technology allows seamless connectivity for existing mobile devices, thus removing the need for specialized hardware, which could enhance user adoption rates.
  4. Robust Infrastructure: The design incorporates large phased arrays and proprietary ASIC chips that provide exceptional signal strength and throughput capacity, benefiting from a bespoke manufacturing process that reduces costs and expedites production timelines.

D. Manufacturing and Operations

The operations of AST SpaceMobile primarily occur from its headquarters in Texas, which spans a satellite assembly and integration facility that measures approximately 185,000 square feet. Additionally, the company engages in international manufacturing partnerships in Spain, Israel, and other locations to source components and subsystems necessary for satellite construction. Significant investments in infrastructure and technology have positioned the company to streamline assembly and testing procedures.

AST SpaceMobile utilizes a strategic approach towards the integration and manufacturing of components, whereby around 95% of the subsystems for their satellites are designed and produced in-house or under strict contract manufacturer guidelines, ensuring IP ownership and reduced supplier dependency. The effective execution of this strategy helps mitigate risks related to supply chain delays and cost fluctuations.

E. Government and Regulatory Landscape

The operations and service offerings of AST SpaceMobile are heavily influenced by national and international telecommunications regulations. The company must navigate various licensing processes with bodies such as the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to ensure compliance with spectrum usage and operational guidelines. The regulatory landscape presents both challenges and opportunities, as AST SpaceMobile seeks approvals for its innovative satellite communication models.

F. Partnerships and Relationships

AST SpaceMobile has established key commercial relationships with various MNOs and wireless infrastructure providers including Vodafone, AT&T, and Rakuten. Through these partnerships, the company aims to develop tailored solutions that expand the reach of the SpaceMobile Service while maximizing profitability for its partners. These agreements often include mutual exclusivity clauses, revenue-sharing models, and collaboration on technological development efforts for satellite-based mobile services.

G. Intellectual Property and Competitive Landscape

AST SpaceMobile's strategic advantage is greatly supported by an extensive intellectual property portfolio, which includes over 3,350 patent claims across 36 patent families globally. This robust portfolio not only solidifies the company’s technological edge but also provides essential protection against competitive threats in a rapidly evolving industry characterized by significant innovation.

Competition in the mobile satellite services sector includes established players like Inmarsat and newer entrants such as SpaceX’s Starlink. AST SpaceMobile differentiates its offering by focusing on high-speed cellular broadband capabilities directly accessible via standard consumer devices, therefore appealing to a broader audience than traditional satellite services.
