April 14, 2026 — Albertsons Companies, Inc. (NYSE: ACI) recently released its financial results for the fourth quarter and full fiscal year ending February 28, 2026. The announcement reflects a year marked by resilience amidst various challenges, particularly within the pharmacy sector.

1. Fourth Quarter Highlights

During the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025, Albertsons reported identical sales growth of 0.7%, a modest increase that was primarily driven by pharmacy sales, despite facing pricing headwinds due to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Notably, digital sales surged by 16%, underscoring the company's successful digital transformation efforts. The loyalty program also saw a significant uptick, with membership increasing 12% to 51.2 million.

However, the company faced a net loss of $481 million, translating to $(0.94) per share. This loss included a substantial charge of $600 million, net of tax, related to the Opioid Settlement Framework. On a more positive note, adjusted net income for the quarter stood at $252 million or $0.48 per share, and adjusted EBITDA was reported at $903 million.

2. Full Year Performance

For the full fiscal year 2025, Albertsons recorded 2.0% growth in identical sales and a 21% increase in digital sales, marking a strong commitment to its digital strategy. The company achieved a net income of $217 million or $0.40 per share, along with an adjusted net income of $1,209 million or $2.18 per share. Adjusted EBITDA for the year was an impressive $3,902 million.

3. CEO Commentary

Susan Morris, CEO of Albertsons, expressed optimism about the company's performance. "Fiscal 2025 was a year of disciplined execution and resilience, as we closed the year with a solid fourth quarter that delivered strong adjusted EBITDA despite meaningful top-line pharmacy-related headwinds," she stated. Morris emphasized the focus on building a stronger foundation for the future, investing in customer value propositions, advancing digital initiatives, and enhancing capabilities for sustainable growth.

4. Financial Results Breakdown

Sales and Revenue

Net sales and other revenue for the fourth quarter reached $20.3 billion, up from $18.8 billion in the same period last year. This increase was bolstered by approximately $1.4 billion in incremental sales attributed to an additional week in the fiscal calendar.

Margin and Expenses

The gross margin rate slightly decreased to 27.2%, down from 27.4% in the prior year, primarily due to rising delivery and handling costs associated with digital sales growth. Selling and administrative expenses increased to 29.6% of net sales, compared to 25.7% in the previous year, though on an adjusted basis, these expenses decreased marginally by two basis points.

Interest expenses were also higher, amounting to $141.1 million, reflecting increased borrowings.

Opioid Settlement Framework

A major factor influencing the company's financials was the $773.8 million charge related to the Opioid Settlement Framework. This framework aims to resolve claims against the company from various states and tribes, with payments expected to be made over nine years.

5. Capital Allocation and Shareholder Returns

In fiscal 2025, Albertsons made capital expenditures of $1.839 billion, focusing on store remodels, new store openings, and investments in digital platforms. The company announced a 13% increase in its quarterly cash dividend, raising it from $0.15 to $0.17 per share, payable on May 8, 2026.

Albertsons also completed a $750 million accelerated share repurchase agreement, returning significant capital to shareholders. The Board authorized an additional $900 million for share repurchases, increasing the total remaining authorization to $2 billion.

6. Fiscal 2026 Outlook

As Albertsons looks ahead, it provided guidance for fiscal 2026, forecasting identical sales growth between 0.0% to 1.0%, which accounts for an estimated 150 basis point headwind from the IRA. The company anticipates adjusted EBITDA in the range of $3.850 billion to $3.925 billion and adjusted net income per Class A common share between $2.22 to $2.32.

7. Conclusion

Albertsons Companies, Inc. navigated a challenging fiscal 2025 with a mix of growth in digital sales and loyalty membership, while facing significant financial setbacks due to external pressures such as the Opioid Settlement Framework. With a focus on enhancing its digital infrastructure and shareholder returns, the company aims to build a more resilient future as it enters fiscal 2026.
